After a horrendous journey by train to get to Max Gate , 20 mins walk from town of Dorchester ,Dorset i well recommend Thomas Hardy's house . National Trust owned , Non members to pay to get in £8:30 per adult (Jan 2020 prices) The staff make you very welcome and there was a brilliant guide book which has been written by a member of the house tells you all you need to know about Max Gate . You start off downstairs next to the Drawing room and as you go round you feel the presence of Hardy himself, and his famous guests as well . Everything is in situ and as you make your way upstairs you come to his third study study room where he used to write and look out onto the garden ,You will also see the attic room where his wife Emma had her privacy . His master bedroom was very neat and tidy ..And even had a mock cooked breakfast on the bed ! Downstairs was a small kitchen area where you could make yourself a cup of tea & enjoy a slice of cake where you pay a donation and also the toilets . Outside the garden was lovely , Large , Plenty of lawn and plenty of flowers i imagine coming out in the summer , Look out for the second hand book shop and his pet cemetery .

Unique church featuring the world largest collection of Sir Laurence Whistler's engraved glass windows. A must see for all art lovers. The first church was built in 1190 and rebuilt in 1410 and 1776. A war time bombing on 8 October 1940 extensively damaged the church and the refurbishment resulted in the 13 uniquely artistic engraved glass windows by Sir Laurence Whistler that we have today. Sir Laurence Whistler is general regarded as the man who revived glass engraving in the 20th century and he spent nearly 40 years of his life working on the church. The first windows being installed in 1955 and the last window, which was engraved in 1993, and only installed in 2013. (Note: The 13th window can only be seen from outside the church. Follow the gravel path. Lawrence of Arabia (T E Lawrence) is also buried in the New Cemetery across the road. You can also explore the village of Moreton with a free entry walled garden, two tearooms, the River Frome and plenty of countryside walks.

Came in search of Lawrence of Arabia's grave and came across the nearby church where his funeral service took place. We knew nothing about it's history and were struck by it's light airy interior lit by clear windows covered in delicate engravings instead of the expected stained glass. We then discovered it had been badly damaged by a bomb during the war, as the guide delicately puts it ' presumably ' German. It's a lovely church with a quiet peaceful ambiance. Well worth seeking out. Tastefully and boldly restored , matching the old and new.

St George's is one of the most magnificent 18th-century church in Dorset. It rises from the rocky and dramatic peninsula of Portland and is the masterwork of a local mason named Thomas Gilbert whose grandfather supplied the Portland stone used to build St Paul's Cathedral. The interior is fabulously preserved with its lectern, pulpit, box pews and galleries all surviving. The sprawling churchyard is a treasure trove of fabulous headstones and memorials that tell tales of murder, piracy and adventure in a gloriously atmospheric setting.

Went up to St. George’s church with my jack Russell denzal, always have a wander around the grave yard looking at the headstones it’s so interesting!!! The church is awsum if you haven’t been before it’s one of the many Jewell’s of Portland there was a guide on when we visited John and he welcomed me and denzal in which was great there’s so many places don’t allow your dog in.. even had a ring of the bell!! Even if there isn’t a guide the doors open on a automatic timer around 10 I believe until 16.30hrs the door is stiff and you will need to gently nudge it... the church has recently had new gates put onto the entrance compliments of Tesco portland its a wonderful church with lots of history looked after by a fabulous church charity well worth a visit guys
