Crete (Greek: Κρήτη, Kríti ['kriti]; Ancient Greek: Κρήτη, Krḗtē) is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the 88th largest island in the world and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica. Crete and a number of surrounding islands and islets constitute the region of Crete (Greek: Περιφέρεια Κρήτης), one of the 13 top-level administrative units of Greece. The capital and the largest city is Heraklion. As of 2011, the region had a population of 623,065.

This freshwater, cool, picturesque lake was a highlight of our time in Crete. Pedal out into the opposite edges, and you’ll find that the water is about three feet deep, totally clear, and teeming with koi carp. My daughter snorkelled in it for a couple of hours while I pootled about in the boat. We could have spent the whole day. Tip: eat at Georgia’s taverna just before you turn in to the lake. There’s a beautiful garden, with trampoline, and you’ll get a warm welcome, and raki with cookies to finish. Her speciality, home-grown food, is beautiful!

Came across Agios Nikolaos by accident, what a little stunner of a town, a few nice shopping streets, a lake where they were doing cliff diving and great little cafes, where the food is wonderful.

It's a nice little disused reservoir dam, but local people never go round it. They stay on its west side, and for a good reason: you only see the lake on that part of the path. If you have parked near the Enasma cafe, go north and follow the path for 200 metres. When it ends, go back to the Enasma cafe and head south for 200–300 metres, and then turn round again. Going twice on the same path is not a problem because you should see lots of beautiful birds and insects, notably dragonflies. I've seen litteraly hundreds of violet dropwings (please see enclosed pictures). There are only a few terrapins, but many red-eared sliders, an invasive species and a threat to native animals, including terrapins. Some guys probably had one as a pet and they released them here. The Enasma cafe has a beautiful shady garden. It's perfect for a moment of relaxation, but I was a little bit annoyed to pay 5 euros for a glass of wine. That's five times more than in my favourite taverna.

Zaros Lake was one of our trips from Matala during our holiday. We enjoyed the lovely nature there, with fish, turtles and many water birds. We went for a hike from the lake to the Rouvas gorge. It was wonderful.
