September 20, 2021 Emerita Lamoureux

Connecticut is a study in attraction and contrast. In one small state, you’ll find miles of sandy oceanfront shoreline, acres of forested hiking trails, and world-class museums, art and theater. Here family-friendly adventure parks and aquariums are just minutes from dynamic casino resorts and quaint, historic small towns — offering experiences that range from culinary to cultural, luxurious to laid-back. It’s the perfect place to unwind and recharge, all at the same time.

I went with the family and we took a lesson there. Heather, the instructor, was excellent and so attuned to the student's needs. She also made the whole experience fun and exciting. The staff, in general, were pleasant and courteous. The place was really well-groomed and despite the relatively warm weather the snow was excellent to ski on. The whole family had a great experience and I'll definitely return.

I really learned to appreciate Ski Sundown this season with COVID-19. I was able to go skiing locally 10 days this season. Because of quarantine restrictions, skiing access outside of Connecticut was really limited. Without Sundown I would have had a 2 day season as opposed to a 12 day season. Before this year, my entire experience with Ski Sundown was at night. Night skiing is great there. Everything is illuminated very well, except for a single connector trail. In the past, they did grooming between 5 & 6 PM but didn't do it this year. The area is open from 8 or 9 AM to 10 PM at night. This year with an altered work schedule I was also able to ski there during the day. Day skiing is great too. Views are especially good from the top of Gunbarrel trail. This year I used a Mid-Week Pass which is a really good deal. 12 days of skiing for a little under $300. Once your pass has been read for the day, one can ski anytime during open hours, day or night, and can come or go as desired. The pass was also great in that you could go whenever you want during COVID. No reservation was required for the pass but you were strongly encouraged to pre-reserve standard lift tickets, since on busier days you could go and find out they were sold out. I typically skied about 20 runs over a 5 hour period each time. Trail difficulty varies from very easy learning trails to the double black Satan's Stairway. The learning trails start with a flat conveyer, then a sloped conveyer, then a slow lift to practice on, so they have a full range of slopes. Then you can graduate to the two lifts on the main mountain. Snow making is very impressive. From what I can tell, they can make snow on the entire mountain all at once. That capability enables them to recover quickly from the occasional thaws that happen every year in CT. The season started with all made snow and was great, except you had to be careful not to go off the edge! Later the season had great natural snow. The lodge is nice but somewhat rustic. it has bathrooms, a cafeteria, a viewing area, indoor and outdoor seating, and lockers and gear storage. The cafeteria is not as good as in the past, mostly due to everything having to be pre-made for COVID. They had a grill for weekend and holiday use which was probably better. Parking is excellent and close to the lodge. Staff are all very nice and helpful, both indoors and out. I've never been to another ski area where I've seen the ski patrol practice rescues as much as they do here. The place does need a new computer system, or a computer expert to revamp their existing system. Purchasing passes or getting them printed was always difficult due to system misbehavior. I got staff assistance but then they had problems too. Another advantage of getting the Mid Week Pass is you only have to deal with the computerized purchasing system once.
