La Pedriza

Reviewed By gabir712 - Sharon, United States

I couldn't find a lot of specific info in English online about how to do this, so hopefully this can be helpful to someone -- Step 1: Download the Spain map on the app Maps.Me -- it has all the trails to various peaks on it, the altitude, and the hiking times, so you can go exploring and still easily find your way back to town afterwards. Once it's downloaded, you don't need internet access to use it which is helpful. I had no idea which path was the actual La Pedriza route, but I mapped out my own loop using this app through the park and had a fabulous time. Getting here from Madrid, you simply go to the Plaza de Castilla subway stop and find your way to the attached bus station. Buses seem to leave about every half hour and only cost about 4 euro. It takes approx. 45 minutes to reach Manzanares and the bus will plop you right in front of the castle. Unforunately it was closed on the day I went (New Year's Day), but you can still get a view of it if you walk around it. From there it's a 20-30 min walk to the park entrance/start of the hiking paths. Entrance is free. The trails are rocky at parts, but the incline isn't very intense, and completely flattens out at the top. The path I took was not very well marked going up, but by using my GPS on maps.me I was always able to correct myself when I went off trail accidentally. The views of the surrounding mountains and town and lake below were beautiful! There were lots of large birds circling close above at the top and even ran into some wild mountain goats, which being from a major city I found to be cool haha. Mid-winter, it was absolutely perfect hiking temperature. From the castle and back I walked about 3 hours or so, including a lunch break at the top. I'll include a picture of my route. Buses going back to Plaza de Castilla in Madrid leave even more frequently. Was a great day trip, and even with barely any Spanish I found it really easy to do. I'm a 24 year old girl travelling solo, and this felt safe and simple. I was originally going to go with an Airbnb experience actually, but it was canceled that day and I decided to figure it out on my own. If you want to try this, but with less hassle, a girl named Eugenia offers trips through the app for a fair price. Good luck!

Only a short distance from Madrid, this is a must visit. The self guided tour takes c 1.5 hours (there’s also options to book a tour or download an app to guide you during your visit) and you get to see a good few, elaborately decorated, rooms and the grand staircase. The gardens can be explored separately free of charge.
