Things to do in Chilean Patagonia, Chilean Patagonia: The Best Bodies of Water

November 22, 2021 Janean Rudisill

Dazzling fjords and vertiginous Andean peaks cover Chile's best-known region, turning this slim swath of land into a playground for skiing, whitewater rafting and trekking. To the north lies San Rafael Lagoon National Park with its impressive ice fields. In Patagonia's southern stretch, the city of Punta Arenas is the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park, which attracts serious climbers and casual day hikers to its granite peaks, glaciers and waterfalls.

Futaleufu River

The Earth River rafting journey on the Futuleufu river is spectacular and amazing in all ways. The vast pristine landscapes, the professional and compassionate staff, the personal challenges one has the opportunity to confront, the lodging and food, the activities on and off the river all add up to an unforgettable experience. If you are a beginner - GO! The expedition is designed to help you become more confident on the water as the days progress. By the last day the class five rapids are a source of awe inspiring beauty and sheer joy. The staff are so encouraging, always pointing to the positive, they helped me to feel like "You got this and if you don't - we got you!" My love of white water paddling was ignited and I hope to travel with Earth River Expeditions again in the near future. The supply list is actually pretty complete. If you are a woman I would suggest adding two pairs of leggings, a sarong and one more long sleeve top for evenings. I would also bring a thin warm hat for the hike to Obsession lake. I am a plant based eater and except for a milk alternative they were able to accommodate my dietary needs. There were fresh fruits, vegetables and plant based options at every meal. The rivers combined with the glaciers, the waterfalls, the granite walls, the trees, the sun and clouds, the stars and the mysteries of the cosmos are awaiting you. I would recommend this Earth River Expeditions journey to the Futuleafu in an adventure seeking heartbeat!

Nordenskjold Lake

Formed by a melting glacier, this beautiful lake is a milky turquoise color, produced by the algae at the bottom.

We visited the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine last November staying at the excellent Hotel Lago Grey. The view from the window of our very comfortable room looked out across the Lago Grey to the mountains with the Glacier Grey to our left. The hotel's restaurant was very good and the staff pleasantly attentive. The journey to the National Park is very long - we came up from Punta Arenas - but it is well worth while. The turquoise of lakes and the blue and white of the mountains are awesome.

The hotel is run by the fame US company that also runs the catamaran that takes you to the San Rafael glacier. Customer service was perfect. Food was great. Rooms spacious and spotless. We stayed two nights. We arrived around 6pm, had diner in the bar area (we skipped the buffet). The food was good. The next day we first had a great breakfast and at 7am the tour to the glacier started. In the catamaran they again gave us breakfast and, later, lunch. The trip to the glacier takes about 5 hours. Then, 2 hours at the glacier where they take you in small zodiac boats close to the glacier. We saw a leopard seal lounging on a small iceberg about 15 feet from us. On the way back they give you whiskey with ice from the glacier and diner. Overall, excellent.

Jeinimeni Lake

On the way to “Parque nacional Patagonia you can visit “Cueva de los manos” and the “Piedra clavada”, it is spectacular. It’s quite steep up and down and it can be with strong winds. But the view from the viewpoint is great. The way to the parque is long but the “ripio” wasn’t’t bad. The campgroung “El silencio” is really nice, basic equipment but you can have a hot shower. There are different walks from half an hour to hikings up to five days in the new parque (before there were three “reservas”, since last year there is just one national parquet going south to the “Lago Cochrane”. Bring your own food and drinks because there you won’t find anything.
