Aletta's Goat Farm

Reviewed By Sometimessara - Selbyville, United States

While my husband was off diving one morning, I took the opportunity to head to Aletta’s for a tour. When I arrived Aletta was surprised to have a solo visitor and explained she didn’t have any help that day but I was welcome to tag along while she tended the goats. She was in the middle of milking and let me have a go at it as well. I’m sure I was a tad annoying, peppering her with questions, but I learned a lot about what it takes for her to operate the goat farm. After the bulk of the morning chores were done, Aletta brought me under the canopy of a large tree and provided a tray of goat milk, goat yogurt, goat cheese and lemon balm iced tea for me to try. Wow! The goat dairy products taste far better fresh than store bought! The goats were in the yard at this point and one particular goat took a fancy to me. Aletta shared her plans for the permaculture she envisions at the farm. She told of the challenges and accomplishments she’s experienced thus far. I was truly impressed with her conservation efforts and how she works with other businesses on the island to reduce not only her overhead, but island waste. Being around goats makes your heart smile and mine was smiling exceptionally big by the time I departed, with a jar of goat cheese of purchased to enjoy with my husband. I will definitely come back next year, with my husband so he can experience it as well.

Paul has a little slice of Heaven on a secluded beach that has zero tourists- just locals and travelers interested in authentic cultural experiences. We learned so much from Paul- he showed us how to cook a traditional meal using vegetables he grew on his farm. He told us abt the history of the island, the slave trade, his ancestors and how they taught him abt medicinal plants and Caribbean cooking. He gave us a tour of his farm and the forest but we still had plenty of time to just relax on the beach. We felt like we experienced the real St Lucia for a day- it was the highlight of our trip!

Spirit Mountain

Spirit Mountain's Ecological Reserve and Organic Coffee Plantation is nestled high in the foot hills of the Cordillera Central Mountain Range. The Farm is located at at the far reaches of Angostura de Manabao, approximately 15 miles from Jarabacoa, 3 miles beyond Manabao. This is rugged land and unpaved roads, so if your not up for an adventure, you may not want to venture this far into the mountains of Hispaniola. We are an operating Coffee Plantation...not a tourist attraction. During a visit, you are likely to see typical operations related to producing some of the worlds best coffees. Harvesting season is from January through April, if you would like to try your hand at picking coffee. Learn about sustainable organic farming first hand, see the rarest endemic birds of Hispaniola or just kickback up at our rustic camp site, Camp Spirit Discovery. During the off season, our crews will be planting coffee, taking care of the shade canopy and performing general farm maintenance. We cater to those interested in more than just a vacation. The farm is open all day every day for self guided yours. The farm is on google maps, and you can check in with Rosa, the plantation manager's wife. Their house is directly in front of the farm on the right hand side of the road, about 100 meters from the farm entrance. if you let Rosa know a couple of hours in advance, she will prepare you a typical lunch, with some of our fresh roasted coffee! It is easy to spend an entire day trekking around the farm and only experience a small portion of what there is to see. Be prepared for a challenging drive up to the farm. Recent improvements to the 700 meter long access road makes the property "almost" 2 wheel drive accessible. If your interested in spending a night or more at Spirit Mountain, there are VERY rustic accommodations at Camp Spirit Discovery, located at an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet. It can get pretty chilly at these elevations, especially in the winter months, so bring plenty of warm clothes. There is a rustic kitchen complete with running water and a wood fired bread oven. Bring your own sleeping bags, but there are some mattresses in the two story open bungalows. If you would like more comfortable accommodations, there is a great little eco-lodge run by the community that has hot water and they will prepare you meals if you like. This is great way to get to know the locals! Come learn with us! You will leave changed.

Amazing camping experience. I was trying to find a place where I could bring my wife and kids for camping. My wife don't like the wilderness at all. I'm a camping enthusiast. Spirit Mountain was the ideal place. 2km deep in the most beautiful mountains of Manabao. You get by car right to the camping site and have all the basics facilities. The walk to the Salto Secreto was amazing, full of nature to find at the end the most beautiful waterfall. There is also a course for downhill mountain bikes, pretty cool too. Cant leave the place without taking your picture on the swing and buying some of ther coffee. SUV is highly recommended. The average temp was about 12-14 Celsius in the evening. during the day 20-22.

I highly recommend the tour of Sandra Farms. Until this tour, I had no idea that quality coffee is actually produced in the US, and I've been roasting my own coffee at home for years. I've always wanted to visit an active coffee farm and Israel's tour did not disappoint! I learned a bunch and thoroughly enjoyed the coffee, chocolate and the views. Hearing Israel talk, you can really feel his passion for producing top grade coffee and you gain an appreciation for this unique place. Sure, the road in is a bit of an adventure, but that's just part of the fun! (and it's really not that bad) :-P And for other coffee geeks out there: After getting their green coffee home and trying different roast levels, my favorite is right around City+. It's bright and nutty with hints of fruit (to my palate). It compares well to other premium gourmet and boutique coffees. [Sandra Farms, Wet Process, Medium Coffee.
