Things to do in California, United States: The Best Other Outdoor Activities

February 15, 2022 Trinity Boughner

California is a fertile, peaceful place where you’ll find a near-equal balance of vineyards and deserts, beaches and mountains, hippies and traditionalists. Catch an epic wave in Big Sur or swirl a glass in Napa Valley. Be dazzled by the Joshua Tree night sky or just star-gaze in Hollywood. Swish down the slopes of a Tahoe ski resort, or cruise across the Golden Gate Bridge with the top down and the music blasting. Above all, don’t forget to soak up some Golden State sunshine.

Tributary Whitewater Tours - South Fork American River Rafting

The South Fork American River is the most popular California whitewater rafting river in the West. It is exciting and lots of fun, with many memorable class 2-3+ rapids. The river flows for 21 miles through the green and gold foothills of California's Gold Rush Country and it has served as an introduction to California rafting for countless beginners. The South Fork American River is suitable for nearly everyone, including families (kids from 8 yrs), corporate and youth groups. We offer ½ day, 1 day, and 2 day trips, all meeting at our camp in the Coloma/Lotus area and will start with an orientation & safety talk. Life jackets will be fitted and paddling instruction is given. Each raft will be manned by a professional, skilled river guide. Located 1 hr east of Sacramento the South Fork American is ideal for a multi-day combo trip with the Middle Fork American, North Fork American, or North Fork Yuba Rivers.

This was one of my favorite discoveries in the Pacific Palisades. The garden there is breathtaking and so peaceful. There are beautiful quotes and statues for you. Small seats to stop, relax, pray or meditate. You leave there feeling stress free and calm. Love it and will definitely go back every visit to LA.

Here is the bottom line: I did my homework and concluded that Far Fung is the best travel company to plan and facilitate your adventure to Bhutan, and their guide, Karchung, is the best individual to introduce you to Bhutanese culture and society. Why? Our family of five just spent three wonderful weeks in Bhutan. We had the advantage that Far Fung has had a long-term, 25-year presence within Bhutan. Through their established relationships with many Bhutanese, we enjoyed a very personalized and educational introduction into Bhutan. In addition to touring and learning the history of Bhutan, we also met with a representative spectrum of individuals throughout Bhutanese society: farmers, teachers, business leaders, scholars, authors, Buddhist leaders, doctors, mental health workers, politicians, and various civil servants. Kathleen, Denis, and their staff were meticulous in helping us plan and flawless in orchestrating the logistics of our visit. Since I have spent a lifetime traveling and studying various cultures in pursuit of my anthropological and psychological interests, I have fairly high expectations of travel companies and guides. Karchung is the best overall guide that I have ever encountered. His breath of knowledge regarding history, society, Buddhism, and culture was stunning. His storytelling abilities entertained and enlightened us. Karchung is also one of the nicest and kindest individuals that I have ever met. His warm heart, caring disposition, humor, and continuous attention transformed our relationship from guide to friend. You have my unconditional endorsement of Far Fung!

On our way north to the coast, we stopped to stretch our legs at Founders Grove. This is a short walking path, less than a mile. It is perfect for all ages and abilities due to the level grade. This is a busy path but the pure quantity of redwoods makes this a worthwhile stop.

This smaller cove is my favorite. There are rocks on both sides for exploring tide pools and taking walks (when the tide is lower) to the other beaches.
