Things to do in California, United States: The Best Operas

June 19, 2021 Concepcion Newsome

California is a fertile, peaceful place where you’ll find a near-equal balance of vineyards and deserts, beaches and mountains, hippies and traditionalists. Catch an epic wave in Big Sur or swirl a glass in Napa Valley. Be dazzled by the Joshua Tree night sky or just star-gaze in Hollywood. Swish down the slopes of a Tahoe ski resort, or cruise across the Golden Gate Bridge with the top down and the music blasting. Above all, don’t forget to soak up some Golden State sunshine.

We have been thrilling audiences in San Francisco since 1923. We are known for commissioning numerous world premieres, training some of opera's greatest young artists and being one of the world's leading opera companies. Come visit us during our fall season (September - early December) or our summer season (late May - early July) and enjoy an incredible night out.

When on our travels we always aim to attend an operatic presentation. Thus we were thrilled that Tosca was hosted during our time here. It was a marvellous performance, with quite an international ensemble. Impressive acoustics enhanced the soaring singing. A traditional staging, there was no hint of a modern setting. The opera house is imposing with a fine facade comprising Classical forms. Inside is gorgeous with the auditorium particularly attractive.

Los Angeles Opera

This was a very fun experience. Seeing a movie and having it soundtracked with a live orchestra is amazing. The venue for this particular presentation was at the Theatre at the Ace Hotel in DTLA. Valet parking is offered and the fact that it is part of a hotel doesn't hurt either.
