This imposing structure, built by the Knights of St. John in the early 15th century, is the most prominent feature of Bodrum.

Pedasa Antique City

I did everything you must not do. I imagined it would be like Mycenae or Troy (ie very very small), wrong!! - no research (just a hotel map) no water, no mobile phone, no compass. Belief me - I am fit but it would have been very easy to die in this place. We took a taxi from Bodrum, late September. There was no one manning the gate, so we drove about a mile and was dropped off at the Watch Tower where there were some people who had clearly given up at the first hill. However there were some stones coloured with white and red paint and a couple of badly faded signs. Passing several walls and strange open holes we went over the first hill, came to a large clearing and in front was a second large hill with a very steep climb and a wall visible. I left my wife at the clearing and went up the hill myself expecting it take about half an hour. I returned from the top quickly as a realised time I had taken too long. there were so many goat trails that although I started correctly (had left a maker) but I was soon lost in the trees. I never managed to find her. With the heat and thirst, I hallucinated and started to lose strength. Trying to find a path through the trees and thorn bushes was impossible but I found a dried up river bed and after going the wrong way at first, retraced my steps, climbing higher and stumbled on the stones of the some part of the city. In clearing I found some full but discarded bottle of water which I drank and then a track used by vehicles. I knew it was leading the wrong way but (correctly) followed it down to a main road at the North end of the isthmus near Torba where a kind motorcyclist took me (bloody, torn and battered) to Bodrum. The Police and a Search Team were looking for me but I never saw any one - but thank them profoundly for their efforts and hope they excuse by recklessness, My ordeal lasted 7 hours. I post this account to warn others on no account to follow by stupidity - it may be your last.
