We have just had a tour with Francisca. We arrived for the 3 o'clock tour and were greeted by a friendly cashier who spoke English and gave us an English script for the tour. We turned out to be the only 2 on it and our lovely guide spoke English for us explaining everything in detail and with good humour. There is so much to see and lots of rooms to visit- more than we saw at Hohenschwangau castle. I think we talked for longer than our allotted time but we're not rushed on our tour. A must see if you are in Berchtesgaden.

Berchtesgaden Salt Mines

This salt mine is fascinating in of itself, but the whole experience is extremely well organised and executed - everyone in our group thoroughly enjoyed our tour! The combination of walking round, underground train and explanations is superbly thought through, the slides being a fun addition especially for children (but they do have an alternative option as well). The handsets for languages other than German generally worked very well indeed, although there were some glitches, but at least one of our group's worked at every stopping place so we were able to explain to anyone who had had problems. The highlight of the whole tour is the boat trip across the mirror lake, complete with light show - what a surreal experience underground!!! Excellent, much much better than anticipated!

Why do people moan about visiting a museum when they aren’t interested in the history, beats me. So to all those people who moan about being ripped off or the staff not speaking English (which they do by the way) etc, go on the web site and everything you need to know is written in black and white, ‘O’ and in English. The cost to get in is €3 which includes the Audio guide, free for school kids, Military and Emergency Services etc, so what’s to moan about..... This is the 3rd time I’ve been here, the Bunker System was great, the new museum being built, due to be open in 2 years will be brilliant. So at the moment it is a bit cramped but that’ll all be rectified come 2021 ‘ish’...... Ps if you want to moan about what’s exhibited and written then write to these people instead of moaning at the staff..... (A permanent exhibition on the history of Obersalzberg and the Nazi dictatorship by the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History)......

Rossfeld Panoramastrasse

There is a toll but you will be happy to pay it when you see where the road takes you. High alpine views. We drove on a partly cloudy day in mid-May. The road was clear, but there was snow banked up in places on the side. There are several easy pullouts, one in particular at a bridge about mid-way where you have wonderful views of snow-capped peaks, so close you feel as if you can reach out and touch them. I was clad in shorts and a shirt and it felt perfect. We live in a mountainous region so we generally do not seek out mountain views, and we were not planning on doing this drive. It turned out be wonderful. We stopped at an alpine cafe and had coffee and cake while looking at the peaks on one side, and the expansive view to the town below. I suppose this is very much a weather dependent activity. There are webcams one can check to give an idea before setting out. On the drive out (down) we passed through picturesque alpine meadows, bathed in wonderful green and dotted with farm buildings. A superb outing.
