Casa de Colores School of Traditional Mexican Cooking

Reviewed By justinc393

This was our second time visiting Donna's house, and this time we opted for a private lesson. We decided to tackle the granddaddy of them all the Mole Negro! We followed Donna to the house where we met her friend Miguel and immediately made our way to the kitchen and began cooking our first course... Mole Verde, which we ate as a soup. From there we began to "walk on the dark side" as Donna likes to call it as we began toasting and frying up the ingredients for our Mole Negro. The dish turned out amazing and the cooking was a joy, but the best part of the whole experience was our conversations with Donna and Miguel. It felt much like a holiday dinner at a dear friends house. We talked while we worked and enjoyed the fruits of our labor together at the end along with some beers! Donna has a true gift for relating the cooking techniques as well as the stories and histories of the foods we were working with. The biggest compliment I can pay Donna and Casa De Colores, is that we felt like family! Donna and Miguel, Thank you so much for your time and your hospitality! I cannot wait until our next chance to spend a day with you!

If you're in Cabo, do NOT miss cooking with Issi. We loved visiting the market and seeing where to get spices, meat, and masa. We loved learning how to make all of the different foods - margaritas, tamales, guacamole, salsas, tortillas... and it was all incredibly delicious. Can't speak highly enough of this experience - definitely five stars, and I hope to come back again! Thanks Issi!

I have had two previous immersive Spanish trainings (in Guatemala and Bolivia). However, only now have I come to truly understand the"why" as well as the "what" of this beautiful language because of Hablando Mexicano's excellent approach to teaching. Ivonne, the friendly and helpful woman who runs this school, creates an inviting and flexible experience for all of her students who each get to work with her highly qualified group of teachers in a beautifully shaded back garden. I would recommend this school to anyone who visits the magical town of Todos Santos. You will not only improve your language skills, but also gain insight into this colorful culture.

The Flora Farms cooking class was the most incredible experience. From the welcome to the food, I could not recommend this more. I went once and returned two more times as I wanted to do each of the classes that they offer. Each class includes a fun farm tour on which the guide explains the history of the farm along with agricultural facts, which I found interesting since I don’t know very much about agriculture. My host, Daniel, was very knowledgeable about the Farm and answered all of our questions. The grounds themselves are incredibly kept, and you can sometimes see gardeners taking care of various plants. After the farm tour we went back to the class room and used traditional tools to make different kinds of salsas while enjoying the freshest cocktails. After the class, we sat down and had amazing tamales (this review is focused on my first class which was the tamale class, although EVERY class was amazing - that’s why I went back!). The team is so kind and service oriented, from sweet Ines to Elie to the helpers. I would say this is 100% a must do when visiting Los Cabos. Highlight of my trip for sure.
