Things to do in Antwerp, Flanders: The Best Concerts & Shows

January 17, 2022 Nobuko Falco

Lively Antwerp is a hidden gem. Its medieval streets, Renaissance monuments and vibrant nightlife tend to be overshadowed by its reputation as center of the diamond trade and as the world's fifth-largest port. Biking is a popular choice for getting around this stylish Flemish city. See thousands of Old Masters at the Royal Museum and Rubens House. Experience the bustle of life at the Grote Markt. Marvel at the art and architecture of the still unfinished Cathedral of Our Lady, started in 1351.

De Roma

I saw one of my favourite bands that night, but the venue itself added so much more. It is a beautiful restored classical cinema, with dainty old chairs that feel like stepping back into the 1920s. The acoustic was also very good, and the bar was beautifully stocked if a little expensive.

Theater Elckerlyc

Theater Elckerlyc lies in the heart of Antwerp and has a fascinating history. The theatre was built in 1957 by architect Rie Haan. It was a revolutionary venue for the time and a cultural sanctuary for Antwerp. In the early sixties the venue was home to the biggest theater companies and its stage welcomed many great artists and actors of that era. In 2002 the establishment was taken over and thoroughly renovated by Studio 100. Since 2008 Theater Elckerlyc has become the home base of De Komedie Compagnie. At the end of 2013 the theatre has been made available for external hire to theatre producers, companies, event offices and so on. The tag line "Experience it together" is exactly what this theatre stands for. A visit to Theater Elckerlyc with its red velvet and exceptional programme is an experience in itself. Every staffmember is ready to give the audience the most welcoming night out. The theatre possesses a beautiful modern auditorium with perfect acoustics and a fully equipped theater tower. The auditorium is suited for a wide variety of shows and seats a maximum of 800 spectators
