Oise-Aisne American Cemetery and Memorial

Reviewed By deanh206 - Kent, United Kingdom

A beautiful place to visit. Well kept grounds and serene atmosphere at the American WW1 war grave cemetery. The information office has a lot of the history which was worth reading before going across the road to the graves. 6000 US servicemen are buried here having died in action in July to September 1918. 591 are in unmarked graves. “Lest we forget”

Abbaye Saint-Jean-des-Vignes

I walked around the ruins briefly whilst in Soissons on business. It was 9am on a chilly January morning, and I was the only tourist on the site but the informative plaques were helpful. I would return in season in order to visit the full site.

Chateau of Coucy

The Château and fortifications formed one of the largest defensive structures ever constructed in France. Spreading over 14 hectares, Coucy originally included 33 towers and ramparts stretching over two kilometres. The four main corner towers were similar in size to the central keep of the royal palace of the Louvre while the keep at Coucy was the largest castle tower in Christendom. The ruins remain an impressive and evocative reminder of Coucy’s grandeur despite being badly damaged in the First World War. Very interesting experience of utopia. Well organized. I could allow only 2 hours. If you get into it, it is worth more. Cafeteria looks rather basic, but anyway everybody shows warm welcome.

Chateau-Thierry Monument

Reviewed By romcgee

While the monument is impressive, the visitor center/museum is the treasure on this stop. It provides excellent descriptions of what happened in this area during the Great War. Plan at least an hour in the visitors center.
