The best available Specialty lodgings to stay near Turkey

May 4, 2023 Vivienne Hutton

Risen from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey is a land of cities and countryside, of ancient ruins and contemporary culture. Splash around the mud baths of Dalyan or scramble around the volcanic rock of Goreme. Visiting gorgeous Istanbul, of course, is a no-brainer. Whatever you do, don’t ever, ever skip coffee and desserts: enjoying flowery Turkish Delight and achingly flaky baklava is like a vacation for your taste buds.

it is the front of the house (staff) that makes this hotel special

it may not be a 5 star hotel but the care and kindness of the staff make this hotel special. The property is well located to the historic and cultural tourist staff and the surrounding places around this hotel is most interesting. a bazaar (not the grand bazaar) to over whelm you. the hotel has a great restaurant on site and one outside ideal for families as well. there is also a nice bistro that serves delicious cakes. the rooms are spacious enough and bathroom amenities are great. the hotel itself is housed in a 300 year old building and beautifully enhanced by chanelliers.

We fortunately or unfortunately stayed at the start of the season so it was not too busy however it was rather disappointing that most things were just being put out and other things i.e Pizza oven was no being used yet. The property was just being done up ready for the season to start so lots of handy work and drilling. Garden staff at times commenced this so early we couldn’t sleep. Watch out for dog poo on the grass as some dog owners do not always pick this up. The issues that had been raised by previous customers were just being resolved but not always for the best i.e new towels but these had not been washed leaving fibres on your body after use. I still think hotel needs to change laundry company as dressing gowns were stained we reluctantly touched them. Staff do their absolute best and there was always someone who spoke fairly good English day/night at the front desk. Our star of the stay was Doruk on nights. Charming young man with a good sense of humour and this guy will get you anything you need within reason. His opposite number is Mert on days. Cleaning staff do a daily good clean, they just need a cleaning trolley to carry fresh bedding. Loud music and dogs barking, but this does not usually last past midnight and is not from the site. Would advise you bring your mosquito repellent as this was an issue at night. Food is fairly ok, but start of season we were told most things were not available. I would suggest go to the Marina to eat. If you are fussy about breakfast, bring your favourite cereal. Chef’s are hit and miss, one day the omelette is fantastic the next day it looks like sunny side up. The beach is clean and the water is clean depending on weather.

This is a sweet little hotel on the quiet end of town with parking (at least there was in April!) and wonderful, friendly staff. The staff speak some English and were so helpful and kind to us. The view from the sea view room was beautiful and it was cleaned to a high standard every day, it had a good shower and comfortable bed. The breakfast sat on the terrace was great and we loved having the buffet option (with the occasional new hot item run out to us as soon as it was cooked!) so we didn't waste food like in other hotels. The laundry service is great value at 100TL per load and smells amazing. We would absolutely come back and stay for as long as we could afford to do so.

More than average

We stayed at this hotel apartment during our return from vacation. The hotel has a big compound with well maintained garden and small playground for kids. The room itself was an apartment with a living room and two bedrooms. The main attraction for the hotel is its bathroom which has its own Hanam complete with a huge bathtub. Afyon is famous for its thermal water and you have this aplenty in the comfort of your apartment. The main problem with this hotel is not the staff or the service but the design. The buildings look more like a high school than of a hotel and it only gets worse once you stepped in to the corridors. There’s no sense of space or decor and no attention to detail. There’s a scary staircase going to the lower floor which is completely out of place. It’s the same in the room where the dining table in the middle of the living room is more of a nuisance than a decor or a table that you can actually use. The bathroom is big but there’s a lot of wasted space which makes it look a lot smaller. In general the place is very good and had a lot of potential but it’s definitely let down by the poor design.

Quite good, but

Unfortunately, most of the staff treats people in advance as Russian, not allowing the option that a large number of guests in this hotel are Poles. They speak basic phrases in Russian, hardly any English, so it's hard to get along. 60% of the music you can hear by the pool is nothing but Russian songs. As for cleanliness, it could be better (I noticed a dark coating in the shower part). Food was good, fresh - some of the dishes were replaced with new dish the next day. I liked the design of the room - minimalist, neat, sand colors, white wooden furniture - it looks great. There is a great garden inside the hotel, unfortunately it is not possible to spend time in its surroundings - there is only one bench next to the elevator, where you can sit down if you want to admire the garden. In general, a lot of things to improve, but the hotel is not 5 *, so for 4* it is quite good.

Great spot to stay. We loved the view (there is also a rooftop with a great early morning balloon view), location, and spacious room. Staff were super friendly and helpful to organize tours and show us how to start hikes (you can just walk from the hotel to them). Laundry was done for a reasonable price. Rooms have basic amenities and were clean.

Sukha Cunda Otel

Sukha Cunda, with 18 rooms, some greet the sacred Mount Ida over the Hasır Island, others face the olive groves and the historic windmill, is a family story created by harmony and collective mind. Our admiration for architecture of Ayvalık's old houses and temples was the biggest inspiration for the hotel design. The interior decoration is created based on old Greek architectural details such local stone ‘sarımsak tası’, blend brick walls, wooden ceilings, traditional tile floor and gourd lamp. In order to provide a comfortable accommodation experience, this unique architecture is enriched with modern touches. In Sanskrit, Sukha means comfortable area and inner peace independent of external conditions. Sukha Cunda is a family owned hotel, based on comfortable, peaceful accommodation motivation and curiosity to travel, discovering, traditional tastes, nature and history.

Nice hotel but not 5 star

Reviewed By markok845

We was in the hotel in the end of the October for one week. Hotel is really nice and frame for really quality 5 star hotel is there. It's clean and workers are friendly, but well it don’t work like a 5 star hotel at all. One nice lady speaks fluent english in the reception and few other people speaks english, the rest cannot communicate with you, they can take the orders in the restaurant but no matter what u ask they don’t understand. It makes things bit difficult but we could live with that. But when u ask some food for example from the buffet many they don’t understand / listen what you say, they start to put food on your blade immediately and then u get wrong food, wrong amounts etc. They should listen your order fully, before turning their back and starting to put food on your blade. They never write down orders, so many times they come back to you to ask what was the order.. Few times they even forgot the orders totally, especially if u ask basic thing like water. in the pool area many days nobody came to take orders. Some days there was person to take orders. Usually in 5 star hotels, or even 3-4 star things are setup similarly every time you order something. Well in one week time we got coffee in 7 different kind of glasses/cups, in same breakfast it could be 3 different kind offs. We paid breakfast and dinner in advance for every day. Food is basically good but boringly the same every day in the buffet, so in the last night we didn't even want to eat there anymore and we went elsewhere. They have also nice a la carte list and we did taste things in the lunch, quality ok but not 5 star. Portions are way smaller what they are in their menu book. Pizza is probably frozen pizza which they just warm up in the oven. Rooms are nice so nothing to complain about that. But there are few things to say. Air condition and electricity plugs of when you are not in the room, so when u come back it's hot there and you cannot charge mobile phones or anything if you are not there. It’s 5 star hotel and it don't let you do basic things like that. If you want to use safety box you need to pay 3€ per day in the reception so then someone brings you 4 AAA batteries and instal those to the safety box and they put some code there too that you can use it. Why not just add 3€ more to the room price and don’t play stupid game with batteries and extra fees. We have never seen this kind of thing in 5* hotel. Rooms are cleaned well every day but then in rooms there is one tiny garbage in toilet, but none in the room.. So all the empty bottles, garbage etc are around the room in plastic bags as there is no place to put those. Some of the pools promised to be heated but none are. Hot tup pools are all super cold, there is no point to use those at all. Hotel is in peaceful and beautiful location so it’s shame that so many basic things are in the 3 star hotel quality. There is shuttle to the beach which is free and there is a bar and sun beds etc.. Well this is one more thing that is not in 5* hotel quality, it looks like 2 star hotel beach are. Their spa with massage and Turkish hamam was super good and for that we could give 5 stars.
