Reviewed By chicken-suess-sauercurently allows (and also welcomes) foreigners Jacky's guest house is definitely my #1 choice for Yuanyang. First of all, he was extremely friendly and a great host. The hotel is nice, not busy and you get everything you need. In Winter it's cold at night but there are electric blankets on the beds so it's ok. Second of all, Jacky is a great (also well-traveled) guide for the region. we received a map he just drew for us and gave us detailed hiking instructions, identifying the best hike for us based on the current weather. We wouldn't have had such a great experience in the area if it wasn't for his guidance. Thoroughly enjoyed the trip and the region. Luxury in the rice terraces

Location was great - on the fringe of a working village, at the top end of the rice terraces which stretch all the way down. The view is wonderful and the area is best known for the 'sea of clouds' which is a breathtaking sight in the mornings. The hotel is actually two buildings, one across from the other. The rooms are sizeable, nicely appointed with tasteful interiors. The floors are heated which is a nice touch. It was a comfortable night in Yuanyang after a 7-hour journey from Kunming. Dinner and breakfast was tasty too. The staff were friendly. We enjoyed walking deep into the rice terrace and wandering through the village, shared by friendly dogs, chickens, oxen, ducks and children.

Reviewed By Mik1984The hotel was in a good location to explore the surrounding area. The hotel room was very well equipped, very clean and modern as was the bathroom. My only niggle in the bathroom was the shower was either boiling hot or freezing cold. The food in the hotel was excellent. The staff were very helpful and had basic English.

Great hostel with low budget options and gorgeous views for the upscale
Reviewed By HolistrWe stayed in this place for 3 nights while visiting the yunyang rice terrace fields. It was out of season so there were not many guests and very limited opportunity for catering. In this hostel, they have a small kitchen to cook simple food if necessary. But we were going to the place a few dozen meters down the hill in a coowned hostel to eat. They had a big kitchen - but the food was so so. Laundry service provided. Free wi-fi. 1. getting to this place is no easy walk. There are dozens of stairs in narrow walkways and is impossible to get there by car. You have to leave it at the parking lot up the hill. 2. The staff picked us up at the parking lot at around 6 AM. Kudos. 3. It had the best lounge area I have seen in a long time. I really liked it and we enjoyed to hang out in that part. - there are board games, instruments and card games on shelves you can borrow and play with friends. We had our own RPG ADnD adventure to enjoy in this cozy environment. 5. English speaking owner!! The guy is from Kunming. His whole family sent him over to yunyang to make this business successful and provide revenue. Very helpful and accommodating. He even brought us coffee from another place in the middle of the night. 6. The owner took us to the best morning view over the terraces without the crowds. Definitely would choose it again if staying in yunyang.

Reviewed By AcevindWell situated in front of the rice fields,in a small typical village .the room is large witth view on the back of the hôtel.in front of the room there is a terrace with view on the rice fields.Good point ,there is a heated mattress as sometimes nights are fresh. the hostess,Lucy Lee , is very kind and was very helpful for everything we needed.

Could be even better with a few adjustments

It’s not quite where the main viewing areas are, but the location itself still offers spectacular views. In summary, it’s as close as you can get to a 5 star resort in the area, but there are a few areas, especially in terms of service, which could do with some improvements. Pros: - Beautiful location, we were even lucky enough to see the “sea of clouds” one morning - The hotel itself is beautiful, tranquil, probably as close as you can get to a luxury hotel in the area - Most of the staff are warm and helpful - Healthy and nourishing Chinese style breakfast - Delivering two glasses of warm milk to each room at night is a thoughtful touch Cons - Whilst most of the staff are warm, most are not professionally trained. As such they were ill-equipped to deal with unruly guests who disturbed others. At the front desk, they weren’t as helpful as the professionally trained concierges at the international trains - as an example we asked about hiring a driver and were given some business cards, but they couldn’t / wouldn’t give us any recommendations on what’s a fair price range. All we were told was that negotiations were up to us. Not helpful at all. - In a similar vein, the kitchen and wait staff were completely overwhelmed one night when there were two or three large groups (6 to 10 ppl) plus a few other tables for 2 to 3 ppl. This was partly due to an over zealous tour group leader wanting to inspect every dish that came out of the kitchen, regardless of whether the dish was meant for her group. The resulted in the rest of the diners waiting up to an hour for our food, even for something as simple as stir fried vegetables. - The resort had pretty low occupancy when we were there, and so there was no buffet breakfast during one of the mornings. Instead we were given a set breakfast of congee, rice noodles, fruit and fried eggs. This though wasn’t much of a problem for us as we still enjoyed the breakfast p. - The resort is located a little out of the way and not in a village, unlike the other hotels and hostels. As such, there are limited restaurant options and other facilities. You’re really just confined to eating at the hotel for breakfast and dinner.

Run down, dirty and expensive
Reviewed By beaverdam7The location of this place is just ok, compared to other options in the Pugao village. The view from this hostel is mostly obstructed. Even climbing to the roof of the hostel, the view of the rice terraces are far away and tucked behind of tall buildings down the village. The room was cold, small, run down and was not cleaned very well especially the bathroom. The bathroom was too tiny for comfortably taking shower and shower head was installed right next to the toilet so everything will be wet for long time. Mold was growing on the tiles due to the lack of cleaning and being wet all the time. Old towels provided are made of thin synthetic micro fiber and did not smell clean. There are visible black mold growing in it and I wished I had my own towel! The owner spoke good English, but she was not around most of the times and when she was at hostel she would start every conversation with "so can you pay me for ---?" - not a good feeling to be begged instead of greetings! Her vibe was definitely about taking advantage of non-chinese speaking travelers who do not have many information about the area. She was a bit greedy and cagey and didn't want to give much information about the near by villages or how to get there. Rather she wanted to make more money by offering her own driving to get around. Once I turned down her offer because there are many public shared vans connecting the villages, then her attitude turned cold. Over all, very expensive for what you get. There seemed to be many better options around this village.
