Beautiful Surroundings & Facilities

Reviewed By Jim S

Staff, facilities and views were all great. In fact there were magnificent views from every window in the hotel. This is a good location for a break - even for non-golfers! We were surprised that there was no lift available when you are on the 3rd floor. Even though you could ask for help with suitcases, it wasn't volunteered at check-in - and you still have the stairs to contend with several times each day (NB we don't have mobility issues and are reasonably fit - more of a convenience thing for us). Also a bit disappointed with the very limited choices on the set evening meal menu (eg only six main courses, two of which were veggie, two meat and two fish), AND the menu did not change during our stay (not even with added "specials"). This meant that for stays of more than a couple of days you are running out of choices. Menu was also same as the sample on the website when we booked, so we don't know how often this is changed .

5* for the staff, 2* for the rooms

Hotel is situated in a beautiful relaxing setting. Staff in all areas have been very forthcoming, courteous. Have visited now most Hilton hotels in the UK and this was missing from my list. Very dated and small room. 80/90 Charme. No closed wardrobe or fridge. No aircon either but this isn’t unexpected in this type of building. Windows can’t be opened very widely. Knobs of desk all loose. Annoying constant rattling sound in bathroom. Plus a charming unhygienic shower curtain which most hotels have abandoned by now. Was told I received an upgraded room due to being a Gold member. Believe only the view was upgraded however. Lovely housekeeping team who followed up on special requests very swiftly and even provided us with recommendations of day trips which we followed up on (Melvern Hills). Amazing view over golf course. Rooms all the same hardware though. Also only received a ‘late’ check out until 1pm whilst all Hilton hotels typically arrange 4pm for Gold members. But I understand this depends on the booking situation. Breakfast was usual Hilton OK standard. Again amazing staff who assisted swiftly with special requests. Pool and changing rooms in perfect condition and so is the gym. Had dinner in bar as restaurant allegedly fully booked. Didn’t look busy but maybe staff shortage. Uninspiring menu but this is Hilton’s standard in the UK. Burgers, Tikka Masala, Fish&Chips etc. Had a beef and chicken burger. Chicken burger clearly from freezer. Chicken wasn’t cooked properly and was too hard to eat. Highlighted this to bar manager who was apologetic and asked me what solution I prefer. I would have expected for the charge of £18(!) to be removed proactively but settled with 2 complimentary coffees as I didn’t want to seek any confrontation on this extended weekend break away. Highlighted this to reception who kindly removed the charge. Swift and efficient. Overall mixed feelings. Great software (staff) but hardware (rooms) need urgent improvements. Amended my review as hotel got in contact and clarified certain items. Would come again!

The Royal Hop Pole

This well-known landmark is an amalgamation of historic buildings dating from the 15th and 18th centuries, known as a number of names, including The Crown during King Henry VIII's reign. However, eventually it was named The Royal Hop Pole when Queen Mary visited in 1937 and gave it the official 'Royal.' Charles Dickens even mentions The Royal Hop Pole in his first novel, The Pickwick Papers. Other interesting information and pictures are located all over the hotel, including information on how the Medieval Banqueting Hall was discovered when the hotel was recently refurbished. The Royal Hop Pole has its own beautiful garden which leads to the banks of The River; there you can see picturesque views of the surrounding countryside and the Malverns. Please note, we do not have a lift and, due to the nature of our historic building, all of our rooms are located up at least one flight of stairs.

Cold Sunday lunch

Booked for a Sunday lunch at the Bell as we had both stayed over and eaten here before. Big disappointment food . Plates boiling but food very cool. Potato like glue. Everything pre cooked and rewarmed. Had to keep asking for things. Salt pepper. Serving spoon for cauliflower cheese. Asked did we want any sauces with beef dinner. Asked for horseradish none available! Asked for extra gravy to heat up food but yes cold too. Over charged for sides too but didn’t realise until we had left. Unfortunately we won’t be back

Lovely B&B situated in the centre of Tewkesbury

B&B situated in the heart of Tewkesbury, we stayed here as an alternative to Cardiff/Bristol for the Ed Sheeran concert. We arrived before 4 and I called the host Joan (not Lucy as per my Booking.com review sorry) to be fair Joan came back from Cheltenham to check us in so we could get gone. We were at the back which was quiet as the A38 can sometimes get busy, we didn’t hear a thing. Room quirky with uneven floors, out of square windows, all expected from one of the oldest properties in the town. Bed super comfy, breakfast was great. We stayed two days and it was faultless. There is parking, it can be a squish but not an issue. St Mary’s lane has a car park cash/card £4 and we parked from midnight on the 27th to 8am on the 28th, Joan even offered to refund us which was nice and shows how much Joan does for her customers. Short walk to the Abbey (2/3 mins) which is well worth a visit. Would I stay again yes Thanks for being a great host and sorry for calling you Lucy in the Booking.com review, must have been thinking of Lucy Liu
