A week in Barra

Very nice house in a convenient location. Only a 10 minute walk to downtown and many restaurants. Perfect for 2 couples or a family. The backyard was very private and the pool was very nice for cooling off on the hot days. The beds were very comfortable. Also both bedrooms had A/C and their own master bathrooms which was very nice. The kitchen was well equipped and it had aver spacious dining room with seating for 6. I think the best feature of the house was the rooftop patio. It had a large palapa and a bar with plenty of outdoor furniture. Also included a small propane BBQ and a sink with running water. The view from the rooftop was amazing and you could see the pacific ocean as well. Good value for the price, and I would definitely stay here again!

They made us feel unwelcome!

The local ceviche is absolute the best I’ve ever had. I wish I could have been more myself and relaxed when I visited but family makes most of us behave differently. Maybe someday I’ll return with friends. Mexico has always been very important to me. The cabanas were wonderful! I had my own room which was beyond a great! Listening to the waves crashing outside my room was exquisite. The ocean is like a lullaby every night. I found a puffer fish while snorkeling and the caves there are fun to explore as long as you can find your way back! I swear I saw some of the employees in the US so they must have look a-likes! The turtle sanctuary was so beautiful and we had lunch a little ways down the road at a restaurant on stilts with a great view I couldn’t help but look around. Thank goodness they have internet access there or else my cousin would have died! I think they might buy some property down there so maybe I’ll see you again someday. I’ll be much better company next time, I promise! My feet belong in the sand and always crave a walk on the beach.

Posada Paloma

The noisiest room I have ever been in

Reviewed By John P

First the good stuff. The garden is as lovely as other reviewers mention, although during my time here it was barely used. The owners and staff are friendly, cheerful and charming. And the wifi is pretty good. Good enough to watch movies on my phone. But, and I’m only speaking about room 5 which is a double room at the front of the site and close to the road, it was quite simply the most difficult room to sleep in that I have ever occupied. My first impressions were of faded charm and slight decay. So much so that I did something that I have never done before and pulled out the pillows from their cases. With 2 double beds I had a choice of 4 pillows and I chose the 2 most adequate and consigned the other horrible things to the other bed. Then I washed my hands. One of them was just shocking… The room was large but very basic. Ceiling fans and two hard, upright chairs, a table, and that was it. No aircon, no coffee maker (a first for me in a Mexican hotel) no fridge, no CURTAINS, just a couple of tatty woven things in two of the windows (see photo) and on the biggest window a mosaic of coloured glass that was pretty enough until dawn when its light passing qualities were on full display. Windows…they’re called Ventanas and vents is what they are. To allow air to flow the windows are basically gaps with mosquito screens. No glass at all. And this is the biggest problem because at about 20 feet from a very busy, noisy road traffic noise is your constant bane. The road is very busy: huge engined trucks that shake the room and make a noise like a WW2 bomber coming in to land, cars with loud music and heavy revving motorbikes that seem to run up and down all night as well as all day. You simply cannot even begin to think of sleep here without heavy duty earplugs and eyeshades. My travel clock has a thermometer so I can factually state that on a typical day my room went from an overnight low of 25 (77) to an afternoon high of 28 (82). I’ll bet that’s why the pillows were so manky; you sweat in bed. I had booked for a week on the strength of all these great reviews through a hotel reservation website and 10 minutes after checking in I was onto them for a refund, which was not forthcoming. Why didn’t I just leave you ask? The room cost me £64 per night which I had already paid so I just stayed for a week, waiting to be able to leave, and thankful for my wax earplugs. Even at half the price, which I believe the other rooms are, the noise/sleep issue would be hard to overlook. It’s not their fault that the road is now so busy; I’ll bet it was charming before, but the time has come to install the aircon that the room price demands and put decent stout glass in those windows.

Responsive and client orientated

Although, we had to cancel our reservation at this property I felt the response we received warranted a review. We were scheduled to stay three days at Casa Cometa following a multi-day trip over the Southern mountains of Oaxaca. Unfortunately, my wife became ill and required medical attention. After much deliberation we decided it would be wise to cancel our trip and return to our home in Canada to check out my wife's issues. I contacted Casa Cometa after the deadline for free cancelation. After relaying the reasons for the cancelation and was surprised to received an immediate response that the cancellation would be processed free of charge. Also, I received follow-up e-mails enquiring about my wife's health. We are planning on returning to Oaxaca and given our experience with Casa Cometa I would not hesitate to book again.

Zazil Retreat

Zazil is the Mayan word for ‘light’ and all that the idea of light signifies. On the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Zazil is a unique retreat nestled under the southern arc of the sunlight reaching across the San Agustinillo Bay from east to west all day long. Zazil Retreats is set in a quiet, relaxed hilltop along the sea awash with gentle breezes, fresh sea air against a thick canopy of trees. Rise to birds chirping and rest at night to the soft sounds waves and crickets. Zazil is a place to harmonize your senses with all the effects of the natural surroundings. Lodge in one of nine large, private, separated rooms with breathtaking panoramic terrace views ocean. Resting behind each room is the Mexican Sierra Madre Mountains. Each room is a Mexican tropical ‘palapa’ structure with typical high ceilings made of tropical hardwoods thickly covered with skillfully woven dried palm leaves.

Worst travel experience of my life - LGBT/minority travelers beware

Reviewed By MichaelNYCinOaxaca

I am a well-traveled 30 year old lawyer from New York. The host/owner of this property, Christa, is one of the most unhinged people I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. I was scheduled to stay at Zazil Retreat for 4 nights, but left due to serious safety concerns in the middle of the first night. I was surprised to learn after arriving to Zazil Retreat that the property has two attack dogs that roam the property loose at night (this information if not disclosed anywhere online). If you arrive to your room after dark (i.e., after dinner) when the attack dogs are roaming freely, you have to send a WhatsApp message to a security guard who tethers the dogs while you walk to your room, then instructs you not to leave your room until 7am when the dogs are no longer loose. (I have spent several weeks in the San Agustinillo area before, and can attest to the fact that it is generally regarded as a very safe place for travelers, which makes this Orwellian security measure especially bizzare). After a first night out of dinner and drinks in San Agustinillo, I sent a message to the security guard that I was returning to the property. While I had arrived to the property alone and had only listed myself on the reservation, I was returning to the property with another man to spend the night. Unknown to me (Christa did not check me in and I did not study the property's list of rules before leaving for dinner), Zazil Retreat has a strict policy that only guests who are registered at the time of booking are allowed to access the property. (To note, while I had only registered myself as a guest, there would have been difference in price if I had originally listed two persons). Shortly after my unregistered guest and I arrived to my room, Christa - who had been tipped off of by her security guard that another man was with me - arrived to unleash a tirade of verbal assaults and threats that were, simply, harrowing. Unable to explain to me why I would have been permitted to list a second guest on my registration form, but not to add a guest during my stay, Christa told me to "shut my f**king mouth". The ensuing verbal assault over the next twenty minutes included Christa calling my guest and me "disgusting", "pigs", stated she hoped we "would die in a pile of sh*t", and threatening to have her attack dogs unleashed upon us. The incident was so deeply unsettling that my guest, who was helpfully a native Mexican and fluent in Spanish, called the police and kept them on the line until I was able to pack my things for us to leave. Fortunately, this did prevent Christa, her security guard, or the attack dogs from harming us. I am at a loss to explain why my guest and I were made to suffer such horrific treatment by a property manager. I have never experience such treatment before in my life. In the days after my experience at Zazil Retreat, I have come to learn that Christa has a reputation about town as being homophobic, racist, and generally intolerant (which I cannot attest to, but I think is relevant to share to warn other LGBT/minority travelers to this area).

Terrible experience

Reviewed By Laura F

This place is to be avoided! The room stifling hot with a ceiling fan totally inoperative...as in NO blades! The owner provided standing fans which provided little relief from the heat. There is no balcony except for the common balcony facing away from the ocean shared by all guests with only one uncomfortable bench. The water pressure was non existent. Just a downward dribble from the shower head. The exposed wall which faced the ocean was of flimsy and haphazard construction with very light screen material. One could easily stumble and fall right through the screen to the ground below. Floor tiles were never set with grout. Just laid down on the subfloor and over 50% of the tiles had cracked in many places making them a tripping hazard. The shared kitchen advertised had a dirt floor. The owner demanded full payment on our arrival and refused us a refund when we cancelled the rest of our stay. I managed to stay only 2 nights and thankfully we found better accommodation. There is no pride of ownership here and absolutely no interest in valuing the customer.
