Dalhousie Castle

Dalhousie Castle Hotel and Aqueous Spa is a magnificent 13th century fortress set within acres of wooded parkland on the picturesque banks of the River Esk. From the moment you arrive at Dalhousie Castle a warm Scottish welcome awaits. Whether relaxing in the the Spa, gathering in the library next to the open fire, dining in the vaulted 2 Rosette winning dungeon restaurant, or retiring to your chambers, you will always feel as welcome as the 'Laird'. Brimming with over 700 years of history, Dalhousie Castle is the kind of place that could have been plucked from the pages of a fairy-tale. But make no mistake, this ancient castle with its complex arrangement of turrets and towers is very much the real McCoy. Once the seat of the Ramsay Clan, the castle boasts an illustrious guest list that includes King Edward I, Sir Walter Scott, Oliver Cromwell and Queen Victoria. Today the castle’s long tradition of hospitality continues and you can still be assured a royal welcome and the highest standards of food and service at this fine four-star hotel. Please note that despite our best efforts it is has not been possible to install a lift in the castle. Instead we invite you to start discovering the castle from the moment you arrive, taking in every nook and cranny and peeking behind unlocked doors and to satisfy your curiosity on the way to your bedchamber.

Honeymoon

Reviewed By amjarzabek

Our stay at the Dalhousie Castle was a perfect ending to our 2week honeymoon! Everything about this place (staff, scenery, dining, etc) was amazing! Only minor flaw is that it is a 30minute drive to city center of Edinburgh but a positive to this is the area is quiet at night. Highly recommend everyone to stay here and remember to book dinner in the restraunt ahead of time - awesome experience!!!

Jubilee weekend trip to remember.

My wife and I stayed over the jubilee weekend and the entire experience was fantastic. The staff were all warm and helpful. The castle and grounds are spectacular, our room looked out over the fountain to the rear and the views were a bonus. We had dinner on the Friday night and my wife and I both had steaks which are lovely and cooked to perfection. Breakfast was very tasty ( I had the eggs benedict which was great) and the selection of buffet items was very good. We rounded off the trip with a jubilee themed afternoon tea which was the perfect way to finish. The cakes and venison burger were highlights. I was must admit I was slightly sceptical about the distance from the hotel to Edinburgh city centre as we planned to spend the Saturday there, however the number 3 bus was very easy to get from the bus stop at the end of the castle driveway. All in all my wife and I had a trip that will remain with us for many years to come and I can’t thank the staff of the Melville castle enough for everything did to make our stay so special.

Bit disappointed second stay , when we last stayed before covid lockdown they said they were renovating, as our room the last time was the smallest but only one available at the time ,we chose to go for a more expensive bigger room ,this turned out to be room 5 still extremely small , very basic and in need of a complete renevation firstly the matress was so uncomfortable and very worn out , the blinds not blackout and curtains don't fit and with a bus stop outside your room !! rather overlooked !! The bathroom was very tired looked to have been retiled, but the bath was old the shower was terrible no place to put anything towels were old and hard like been dried out side for a few days !!! The bar and restaurant do serve very good meals , but again in need of a good declutter and refurbishment, Being the only hotel in such a popular location and tourist attraction, it is missing out on a lot more business I would think . Unfortunately I don't think we would book this hotel again . Shame as we have many friends in the area and it's convenient for us .
