Thornbury Castle Hotel & Restaurant

Thornbury Castle is a beautiful 16th century building, which was once owned by Henry VIII and stands in 15 acres of regal splendour, surrounded by Tudor Walled Gardens. It nestles on the northern edge of Thornbury adjacent to the Gloucestershire countryside, 12 miles north of Bristol, and is well placed for visiting the Cotswolds, the Georgian city of Bath, Bristol and Wales. Following a multi-million pound refurbishment programme, guests will experience a luxurious and sophisticated castle hotel stay, with reference to the history and traditions of Thornbury’s most famous owner; King Henry VIII. Thornbury Castle has 26 carefully-restored bedchambers, all named after key figures from Tudor history. Many with sumptuous four-poster beds and splendid stone-carved fireplaces, making your stay just that little bit more special. The "Catherine of Aragon Tower Suite" boasts the largest bed in a hotel in the UK - 10 feet wide. The restaurant at Thornbury Castle offers plenty of modern, British inspired dishes, as well as some traditional favourites. All dishes on the dinner menu use only the finest and freshest ingredients, many grown in the castle's kitchen garden and herb garden. Afternoon Teas taken in splendid surroundings at Thornbury Castle are the ultimate treat for all guests. The recipient of many prestigious awards for its fine food, Thornbury Castle has three dining rooms, each baronial in style, with stunning chandeliers, panelled walls, heraldic shields and open fires.

Expectations exceeded

Reviewed By GailW2100

We have just returned from a 4 night stay at Thornbury Castle and I have to say our expectations were exceeded. The castle has been through a comprehensive (and sympathetic) restoration over the past two years. We found staff to be professional and welcoming. As we were staying for four nights on a DBB basis we were offered a personalised menu on our third and forth night - this is unusual and refreshing for the hotel to offer. Overall we found the food to be delicious and in particular the homemade sourdough bread was top notch. We look forward to returning soon.

Long overdue and truly excellent return

Reviewed By CiderGeorge

We returned on our 8th anniversary to the place we were married. It was magnificent back then and equally magnificent this time. We had the same room with the wonderful views and enjoyed one of the best Tasting Menu and Wine Flight combinations we have had. The food and service were outstanding and the explanation of the wine and dish combinations was excellent. Worth every penny! Well done to Sarah and her team.

Perfect For A Wedding Venue!

Stayed here on Friday, as I was getting married here on the Saturday in the Garden Room and what a lovely room it was with beautiful decor and plenty of light. I stayed here with my best man, I booked for the restaurant on Friday evening and the food was amazing, first time I tried risotto and loved it, the room we stayed in was beautiful, loved the touch of the complimentary fruit, and the fridge to chill some beer. Breakfast was perfect, not too much, it was just right, we used the swimming pool perfect before your big day! The Garden room was set up beautifully and the member of staff who did the set up, sorry I can't remember her name, was very accommodating, after the ceremony my wife and I loved the touch of the glass of prosecco given to us, I needed it.....thank you. Overall all staff we encountered were lovely, very helpful, nothing was too much trouble, I loved the relaxed atmosphere, I worked in a hotel for 15 year's, I worked in the wrong hotel! We will be back and I'm booking this next year for are first wedding anniversary. Thank you for a pleasant stay.

Disappointing lunch

Reviewed By rosiecraig206

The lunch menu was generic and uninspiring. We chose the charcuterie platter only to be told it wasn't available. How could this be? Surely cold meats, cheeses, sundried tomatoes, pickles etc are staple ingredients that only have to be assembled, not even cooked! So we shared a pizza instead. I think the pizza came from Tesco and certainly wasn't made on the premises. It came with zero garnish. We chose to eat outside as the garden and views are nice, but could barely find a table that was clean and presentable (even though we were the only ones lunching outside). All the wooden furniture looked neglected and needed sanding and restaining, Such a disappointment - we won't be meeting there again.

Spotlessly clean, comfortable bed, good shower. Fluffy white towels. Very helpful staff from checking in to checking out. Very happy to come again. Breakfast across the road, standard P/I farye, no complaints and friendly staff.

Lovely setting, needs updating/decorating

Reviewed By jackie140

We loved the countryside setting, some Premier Inns are on busy roads, or the edge of trading estate. The room was clean, and everything needed was there, however it needs to be modernised/decorated as it's looking a little tired. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The other young that let it down was that there was a lot of things missing from the continental breakfast menu. My daughter was disappointed. The cooked breakfast that my husband and I had was not the best and they left off two items ordered. Tomatoes bacon and mushrooms could have been cooked a bit longer for flavour, quite bland.

We visited Hunters Hall for brunch on Sunday morning following a family get-together the day before. We were asked to pre-order as we were a party of 16, but that was fine, as it meant food arrived promptly. Really impressed by the selection of brunch options and very reasonably priced too. All in all a great end to a lovely family weekend. Thank you.

Fantastic Sunday Lunch

What a gem this pub is, welcoming staff and the food was absolutely fantastic, the best Sunday Lunch was had by all - 2 meat eaters, 1 veggie, all gave rave reviews, delicious deserts, sticky toffee pudding so worth the calories, as was the equally scrumptious banoffee pie, lovely atmosphere highly recommended will definitely hope to return on next visit to the Cotswolds.
