We stayed at the Borrowdale Gates Hotel for a week at the end of May. This hotel is in a brilliant location, with lots of walks on the doorstep. The hotel is very comfortable and the staff work really hard to make your stay enjoyable. The food is excellent - a great choice each evening, dining here is a very relaxing experience. We thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Disappointing & sadly very overpriced

We were so disappointed with our stay here in a Junior Suite for several reasons and staff were very unhelpful when they asked for feedback and we gave it. I was told I wasn't allowed to bring my dog to the Junior Suite as dogs aren't allowed in the main hotel area. Despite being told this a couple in the room opposite ours had a dog staying in their room. I paid £544 for my room for 1 night and then an additional kennel fee to house my dog because staff told me I couldn't bring him, only to see other hotel members with their dogs in the rooms near ours. This is so unprofessional and incredibly unfair and caused an additional expense to our stay The room itself was heated to 25C which was so uncomfortable to sleep in and the temperature control fitted on the wall did absolutely nothing to make the room less stuffy There were 3 false fire alarms pulled between 1-1.30am with no explanation from staff the next morning as to why. So understandably we had an awful night's sleep. The cooked breakfast the next morning was good but again the restaurant was so stuffy! We were also baffled why we couldn't have Cappuchino/Latte with breakfast as apparently the machine isnt turned on until evening service. Considering the price of the rooms in the hotel it seems a bit cheap of you not to offer a nice brew in the morning.

Glaramara Hotel

Glaramara is an independently owned hotel at the southern end of the Borrowdale Valley. Its location is particularly striking with commanding views of the local fells. It is ideal base for a walking holiday with easy (car-free) access to some of the best routes and well-known mountains in the Lake District, including England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. It is ideally placed for a second night stop on the Coast to Coast Walk. We have twenty five double/twin en-suite rooms and eight single en-suite rooms. Facilities include a spacious residents lounge and bar each with log fires, a restaurant and a purpose built function-room known as the ‘Fell View Suite’. Wi-fi via fibre broadband is available for no additional charge, allowing you to keep connected for pleasure and/or business as well as entertained whenever you choose. Whilst we primarily welcome individual guests, families and small groups, our location, grounds and facilities make us a perfect venue for exclusive or non-exclusive event hire both for pleasure and business purposes. We have hosted many large groups, conferences, wedding receptions, family celebrations and other social occasions. We are ‘dog-friendly’ with a small number of rooms allocated for use, subject to conditions. Our bar is open to non-residents so if you are staying or living in the area please feel free to come in. Tea, coffee, snacks and light meals are, also, available to non-residents. We look forward to welcoming you.

Underwhelming

This accommodation is more like a conference centre than a hotel. The room was a good size but the bed uncomfortable. The 7:30pm dinner service for all guests is annoying, we wanted to eat earlier but couldn’t. The reception staff member on check out, a man who could barely bother talking to us was unhelpful. We had paid for a packed lunch in advance but he was adamant it was not included so we had to pay. We have since clarified it was included. I wouldn’t stay here afain, not worth the price.

A paradise for the walker and a perfect centre from which to visit other parts of the Lake District. Long weekend

Booked three nights accommodation for the long weekend. As I arrived I asked for some lunch but was told they were not serving food as the chef had walked out three days before! Ok not a good start. The hotel is in a great spot but is in serious need of a upgrade. I paid £550 for 3 nights so I wouldn’t say it was that cheap. We had dinner one night no idea who prepared the food. Don’t bother on complaining about food as you will be told there is nothing wrong with the food. That waiter needs some serious training on customer service. The other staff we dealt with were lovely and it’s a shame that it’s been run so badly.

Lovely Hotel - 2nd Mortgage Required For Drinks

My wife and I stayed for one night for our first stay in this hotel. Lovely location and very nice lounge area and restaurant. Room was super clean and hard to fault really. The set menu of a single choice meal was a disappointment, I like to see some sort of choice when dining out! The waiters explained each course in exact detail but honestly, after a long day walking in the hills, we just wanted to eat. the food was ok without being particularly special and the portions were light. we had ordered champagne on arrival, had two pints and two glasses of wine in the late afternoon, a bottle of wine for dinner and then three each cocktails in the evening - the bill for the drinks was £289, which seemed overly high :(

We have walked past here on many occasions, but this was our first stay. The lady that greeted us was very smiley and happy and told us everything we needed to know. The room was top notch, comfy bed lovely views of the fells from the bedroom and bathroom, very clean and everything you wanted was in there. The service from the barman and the lady (they seemed to be the only 2 doing everything) was great. They we both pleasant, happy and had a good sense of humour. The food was very good, restaurant standard food. The breakfast was excellent and the service professional. We had a packed lunch which again was excellent - the best we had on our trip. We can't rate it and especially the staff enough.

We have visited quite a number of privately owned country house hotels. This one is very special. As the Husband said when we were leaving - this is probably the nearest to perfection that we have found. We couldn't fault it and will most certainly be back. The location is stunning, the welcome was warm and genuine, the room (Castle Crag) was comfortable and welcoming. It was on the ground floor with a dual aspect - and everyone loves a dual aspect! Well fitted bathroom with walk in shower. L'Occitane toiletries. Huge bath towels. There was a decanter of sherry in the room - something I haven't seen for ages - and homemade biscuits. Usual coffee things in the room with fresh milk in the fridge just outside in the hall. What makes this place stand out is the food. It really is superb. There is a set menu which begins with canapes served in the lovely lounge at 7 p.m. As this is only a small hotel this is a great way to chat to other residents . The wine list is great with an interesting selection of wines by the glass and Gary took pleasure in recommending something a bit out of the ordinary. Dinner - cooked by Donna with huge attention to detail - was a delight. We enjoyed every course on the two nights were there. So much so that I forgot to take photographs but if my memory serves me right Night 1 was asparagus and onion veloute, ham hock terrine with carrot sorbet, duck breast with red cabbage and roast potato with sticky toffee pudding and clotted cream to follow. Night 2 was tomato veloute, mushrooms on sour dough, chicken, hasselback potato and baby sweetcorn with plum and cinnamon crumble to finish. All excellent. The service from Gary and from James was exemplary. Friendly but professional. Exactly what good service should be. We slept like logs both nights. Breakfast was of the same standard as dinner. Buffet table of fruit, cereal and yoghurt then hot food made to order. Great coffee. Great breakfast entertainment from the resident red squirrels who reliably turn up to munch on hazel nuts. We also enjoyed meeting the resident feline Charlie who was as charming as his owners. We were made to feel totally at home and were sad to leave. Would have to stay on at least another night but work called.

Stereotyped by staff. Should have went to magaluf apparently. Find that sort of attitude in bringing more negative press to a resort struggling through these hard times, based on no facts, quite abhorrent
