An oasis of calm, friendliness, nature and relaxation

Reviewed By Andrew W

Set in beautiful, expansive and lush tropical forest gardens Chivapuri is a haven of calm and peacefulness. Approximately 2 hours from Trat airport in a taxi and ferry, the resort is set on the south east corner of Koh Chang on a golden sandy beach. Our taxi was spacious, modern and well cooled and our driver incredibly friendly and helpful. All the staff are absolutely amazing, the groundsmen and women are always busy keeping the paths clear of leaves, housekeeping do their best to make you feel at home and the wonderful people in reception, restaurant and bar became like part of the family to us. Particular praise has to go to Barry on reception for not only making our stay memorable, but also making us feel more than welcome and like nothing was too much to ask, because of Barry it was a once in a lifetime holiday for my wife and I. Noi, Guitar and Anne were amazing hosts in the restaurant, but everyone at the resort was hard working, welcoming and always friendly. We stayed in a Junior Suite (D5, which has a slight view of the sea), which occupies the top floor of the two-story houses behind the few beach villas there are. We had neighbours downstairs a couple of times, but never heard anything from them and always felt like we had the place to ourselves. The resort backs on to the jungle that goes on to the national park and we were lucky to see amazing birds like the greater racket-tailed drongo, little squirrel like animals as well as a green pit viper and lots of monkeys. The cicadas struck up every night just before sunset and were so loud it was like a siren, just absolutely amazing to experience with the beautiful red sunset, which we watched with a cocktail from the bar area beach most nights. The resort is the last one on the beach and definitely a cut above the others as far as we are concerned. We stayed at the end of December and the sea was warm if a little murky from sand being whirled up by small waves. The pool is quite cold in contrast, but was also lovely to cool down in on hot days. Whenever I come to Thailand, I love to eat Thai cuisine, and we were not disappointed at the resort. The staff even went out of their way to provide me with a dish not on their menu that I absolutely love (morning glory), yet they have a large menu that includes plenty of European options, even if they are adapted to what is available in Thailand. I saw lots of European families eating pasta dishes and they seemed as happy as I was with my satay’s and Thai curry’s. It was the second year of the pandemic and when we first arrived, there were not many guests and so not all facilities (like the spa) were available. However, everyone did their best to help and we ended up having massages a few metres down the beach for the first week. When they did open the spa, the massages were amazing, you really felt the ladies knew all about anatomy . All in all we absolutely loved Chivapuri and would recommend it to anyone visiting Koh Chang.

I stayed here happily nearly 2 month in the off season. The hosts and staff are very friendly and accommodating. The bungalows are well maintained and serviced regularly. The restaurant provides a great Menü and there is weekly BBQ. The beach is a dream. The prices are accordingly modest. It's a great place to stay. Thank you so much, I will come again.

Serenity in full blossom

We spent 10 days/nights at this fabulous resort. We knew Koh Chang and Bangbao Bay in advance, but we have never stayed at this resort before. We knew the resort is situated at a beautiful and tranquil beach, but on top of that we were delighted by the cleanliness of the huts and the friendly service extended. Khun Jebbie and her staff runs a very clean and well-organized operation. Some weeks after having booked the resort via booking.com we were contacted by khun Jebbie. She informed us that prices had dropped, and she recommended us to re-book our room in order to obtain a discount. Having arrived at the resort we were even upgraded to a superior room t the same reduced price. Not only did khun Jebbie organize our transport from Bangkok to the resort, but she was also invaluable in coordinating our mandatory second PCR-test with the hospital in Koh Chang as well as communicating the result to us. The resort and the huts have a beautiful view over Bangbao Bay. The sound of the waves and the bird and gecko calls at dusk underlines the tropic atmosphere. the beach restaurant next door serves a variety of excellent Thai and European dishes. Rent a scooter (200 THB per day) at a nearby shop and you have access to the entire island.

Quiet and beautiful

So, I stayed in this hotel for 7 nights and 8 days. It was a working holiday, so I really needed internet, peace to study and the basics. So the pros are should you want to stay in this lush hideaway: Staff are friendly and welcoming for sure. Free shuttle to Klong Kloi beach everyday from 1100hrs to 1600hrs. Swimming pool is good, and views are spectacular. Road going pass hotel upwards leads you to lots of monkeys, found them friendly! Rooms/seaview cottage, wow. The wooden decorations are gorgeous, and I loved the huge comfortable bed. Bathroom was great too, felt like I was living with the Flintstones lol in a great way. There was plenty more good things about this sweet hotel. Cons: just some constructive feedback, no malicious intent. Restaurant: Breakfast could be a little more healthier for such a lovely hotel. Fresh bread, fresh juice and so on for example, would be excellent and appreciated. Evening meals could have healthier options, more choice as the meals unfortunately, sorry weren't that great. Now sorry to say this, staff are indeed lovely but always on their phones, don't seem to have a uniform which would make the hotel look even more professional. At times I felt I was interupting their day so decided to stop using the restaurant part. Either watching something on their phones or relaxing by the pool. Not great to see staff like that. During the 3 times I did use the restaurant: Day one: I said no nuts or carrots, I am allergic to them. My dish came with carrots. Day two: I ordered two portions on chicken nuggets and one portion of fried chicken. I only got one portion of chicken nuggets so I waited an hour, then I politely asked the waiter what happened, he just nodded and smiled. I left hungry and annoyed. Day three: I ordered Chicken Baguette but I received fried chicken. Come on, it is not hard when the customer is pointing out the dish on the menu to get it right! Look, they are friendly waiters and would do anything for you in most cases but just a little professionalism wouldn't go a miss. It would great to have a night shuttle too, for local town Bang Bao just so we can eat and venture out. I asked for a taxi to be booked and the lovely waiter Bear, doubled up as my motorcycle taxi, I was told to pay him 100Baht by the receptionist, of which I did. Second time when I booked him again, he didn't take the money this time, so was a little confused...free or not free? For anyone wanting to stay here, make sure you hire a bike or you could be left stranded as local taxi drivers do not take one person in their taxi as they don't make enough money so you really need to get a motorbike or rely on some good will gesture. The dogs are fine, didn't touch them and they didn't bother me. Lastly, internet was very slow, my whole week break was based on me able to work in peace and quiet with internet, but alas, I had to purchase internet from my phone supplier in order to work which annoyed me a little, so internet here is not great. Now, overall having stayed in hundreds of hotels, this cottage seaside view is one of my favourites! But the lack of amenities let it down slightly. I had a good peaceful time, got most of my work done in peace and at the end of the day that is what I wanted As I always say, you can make your own minds up if you want to stay, look at pics from customers and not website.

Beware, this is no longer deserving a top rating

We have just checked in and are really disappointed. The Dutch owners have long fled the country and that was the key attraction for booking here. The air con didn't work in my first room. Second room had no TV and spider webs everywhere. Lizards and mosquitos populating the room. WiFi doesn't reach my room. Tomorrow I am going to search for a hotel. The high ratings of this are a long distant memory I'm afraid.

Do yourself a favour and do not stay here

Reviewed By llemonadestand

I have a number of things to say about this place, but will start by simply saying: go elsewhere. After a long day of travelling, my partner and I arrived at Asia Backpackers, having booked several weeks in advance. We had thought the photos of the place looked decent- but we were very wrong. When we got there, no one was attending the desk. We were greeted by a spaced out guy from the UK who told us that all his staff had quit. We had booked for a few nights (with a no cancellation fee) but based on the grubby reception area alone, I wanted to go elsewhere. We were shown to our fan bungalow. It was surrounded by rubbish, overlooking rubbish. Nothing like the outlook promised. The bungalow itself was falling apart. The bathroom was clean, but that was the only thing that was: the sheet had not been changed and was dirty. Everything else in the room was filthy, with some kind of droppings all over the window sills, and in between the bed and the wall. There was mould all over the ceiling on one side. I wanted to leave instantly. We are not fussy people - but the room should at least be clean. My partner and I ventured into Bang Bao to see if there was any other options. We realised that the description of the backpackers as 200 metres away from Klong Koi beach was very wrong (try 1 km +), and it was still a 700 ish metre walk to bang bao pier. Not convenient at all. We arrived at the pier eventually and made enquiries at another guesthouse. We found one on bang bao pier over the water (a very central location) with a restaurant, a great outlook over the bay and a friendly local owner (Asia Backpackers is not locally owned). We were shown a simple room which was clean and well maintained. The place was full for that night but we secured room for the remaining time, for exactly the same price per night as we were paying at Asia Backpackers, 600 B. We didn’t sleep well in the bungalow- and promptly checked out the next day. The rest of our holiday was great. To sum up: - go somewhere locally owned and pump some money into the local economy, where it is more likely the owner will care about their business and patrons - there’s plenty of great options for similar prices around bang bao and klong koi - you are bound to find something even if you don’t book in advance (we did and it was the busiest time of year).

Unit BB3 not as advertised

Reviewed By stoontraveler

The property is advertised as a fully equipped luxury villa, which it is not. Upon arrival the fridge was making an excessive amount of noise so we contacted Andrew(Our first request to him was responded to late as h stated he doesn't check the VRBO communication site often and prefers to communicate through WhatsApp) he arranged for a repairman to attend our unit and to bring some glasses and dish towels as they were non existent. I had also mentioned that a couple of lights were burnt out and asked for replacements, which he promised, but they never appeared for the balance of our stay(six nights). The repairman removed the fan, leaving us without a fridge, we had perishables which we asked some neighbors if they could store them till the next day, which if only for one night would have been acceptable. The repairman returned late the next day with a used part which he installed, the noise went away and after 11 hours we were finally able to freeze water in the freezer, but the fridge portion never got back to even keeping things cool, so we had to throw out our perishables and start eating at restaurants which wasn't our plan. We advised that the dishwasher wasn't working and were told they would look at it and never did. This wouldn't have been the end of the world if the hot water was working in the kitchen but it looked like someone had removed the heater under the sink, left the exposed wires and never replaced it, so we ended up having to boil water to wash the dishes (at a luxury fully equipped unit). We kept asking Andrew specific questions about moving us to another unit or some form of financial compensation for all our troubles, but after repeated attempts with the same questions we never received a response. We did recieve an number of "sorry for the inconvenience", but no responses to our very direct questions. We were extremely disappointed ending our vacation at this location mainly because of the property not meeting the advertising and Andrew's lack of response to our direct questions. When he did respond to our first issue by sending a repairman and the glasses we thought things would improve but that certainly was not the case. The couch cushions were stained as well. It's obvious that nobody is inspecting this place to insure that it meets the standards of a "fully equipped luxury unit. The poolside bar is there but has obviously not been used for sometime and there is maintenance required on the pool deck floor boards to make it safe. It is clear from the site where this unit is advertised that Andrew is responsible for a number of units in this complex, I sure hope that they are truly fully equipped.
