Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli

Tortilis Camp has a prime location for witnessing the majesty of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. The camp is named after the flat-topped, umbrella thorn tree, the Acacia Tortilis, and embraces a hill in one of Amboseli’s areas of Acacia Tortilis woodland. Located in a private conservancy bordering the national park, game drives, walks, sundowners and bush meals take place both inside the national park and in the conservancy, where guests enjoy exclusivity. The tents are all spacious, with king or twin beds and elegant en suite bathrooms. There is a main lounge, bar and dining area, all exquisitely built with natural materials and thatched roofs, with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro. The Private House and Family Tent are located slightly separate to the main camp, upon the hill where they share a pool and enjoy magnificent views of Kilimanjaro. Tortilis Camp was one of the first eco-lodges of its size, and is very proudly 100% solar. Guests can rest assure they are leaving a minimal footprint during their stay.

A Superb Camp - Recommend it.

Our recent stay in Kenya was our fourth visit to such a lovely country. Very surprisingly for some, it was the first time we had actually travelled to Amboseli National Park. In May we took a nine-day safari with Sunworld Safaris and focused on southern parks and conservancies, near the Tanzanian border, hoping to get lots of views of Kilimanjaro. ( we did - nearly everyday) Our last two nights were spent at the Elewana Tortilis Camp in Amboseli National Park. We could not have asked for a better place to spend our last two days. Graeme and Candy, who keep a very visual presence at all times, manage the camp with meticulous grace and style. The staff is well trained and a special shout out definitely goes to our room steward, Jackson who was excellent. The room was kept spotless and the attention to small details were appreciated. The camp is very eco-friendly and we appreciated their efforts in this area. Many parts of the world have much to learn from Kenya when it comes to recycling, providing water dispensers and general use of solar power. One small problem we did encounter which is not fault of the property; is some of the other guests staying at the property did not seen to have the same desire for silence as we do when on safari. We noticed a couple of people making an annoying “Facetime” video call in the lobby area of the camp. Also, our afternoon naps were interrupted by people in adjacent tents, making video calls while outside and not using earphones. Graeme and Candy were very supportive of our comments on this issue and the only reason I mention it here is, if you are planning a safari please do not do this at any camp. It is totally annoying and rude. No one else needs to listen to your talk to your friends and family back at home. Most people on safari have paid a lot of money to escape to hear the sounds of animals and birds not “Facetime” calls. Finally, the Elewana Torlilis Camp is registered with “Pack for a Purpose” so if you decided to visit be sure to check the “Pack for a Purpose” website to see if you can squeeze a few needed items in your bag. Candy and Graeme were very thankful for the few items we were able to present them. An excellent place to stay.

Fantastic camp

I stayed here with 5 of my friends. When you arrive at reception you are blown away by how beautiful it is. The tented rooms were luxurious. The staff were so friendly. It is a 5 minute drive to the wonderful Amboseli park. Here we saw lots of elephants, hippo and lots more. Having Kilimanjaro in the background makes this camp a must. The food was buffet style. There was lots of variety and Milton made the best pizza!! A wonderful stay.

Great ambiance but the rooms were too small

Reviewed By cindyaQ5556PT

When we got there the service from the staff was prompt and good. The ambiance was great and we got to see an elephant grazing right next to the fence. However the rooms were too small and quite packed next to each other, it was hard to get the feeling of privacy. It had a congested feel. The food was great but something in it gave me a bad case of breakouts on my face, so much that we checked out after one night. However, if you could get over those, it would be an amazing place to stay as it is right inside the Amboseli national park.

A real highlight of our safari experience

Reviewed By CarrieReadsALot

This camp was our second stop on our adventure and the first I needed to take a small plane to get to (which was exciting on its own). When we got there we were greeted by the most wonderful guides (Jonathan & Daniel) who took us to see the most flamingos I've ever seen! The days we had at this camp were very long, being that the drive time was a little longer to get from the camp to the conservancy, but that gave us even more time to do some great wildlife viewing. We saw EVERYTHING! We ate all our meals enjoying wonderful scenery and even had breakfast with the elephants! I can't even put into words how beautiful everything was and how diverse the landscape. This is absolutely a can't miss destination if you are planning a safari. Sunset drinks and snacks were especially scenic at this camp, given the variety of location we had. As this was our second camp, we were already accustomed to the safari shower experience and the tents - which were both still great! Still no bug bites, no bugs in the tent, and absolute 5 star service and food somehow in the middle of the wilderness.

Kilima Safari Camp

Overprized and run down tented camp

Reviewed By 997oysteins

The google map attached to the Kilima own web page is not truthful, as the camp lies outside of the Amboseli park (next to Kimana gate) and not inside the NP itself. The camp has seen better days, run down and broken things are not mended. All in all a quite unpersonal place. The prices for a night are really not worth it, simply very overpriced. The food is also mediocre, and simple. The staff are however friendly (as are most Kenyans). The rooms are a mix of tents and solid walls, but lacking totally a feeling of safari!

Nice place at the foot of Kilimanjaro

Reviewed By Krista S

I really enjoyed this hotel. The food was good, and the staff was great for the most part. Our guide arranged for us to walk with a Maasai conservationist on staff, and that was really cool. The morning view of the mountain was stunning. We liked that we could buy and mail post cards right there, though we are going on two months since sending them and they have yet to arrive. ? The reason I am giving them a lot rating is because there was a safari guide there harassing me for attention, and when I refused to join him for a drink he got an employee of the lodge to deliver a message to my room. They went to the wrong room though, and my friend refused to answer the door. We went to reception to find it what was going on, and thankfully OUR guide happened to be there and was able to communicate with the last and the room steward who had tried to deliver the message. They made up a story about some other guide needing to get a message to their client and it was just a mistake. But the next morning there was a note for me on my breakfast table from the guy, and he made sure to stop by to tell me to call him later before he moved on with his clients. I let our guide know what happened, and he told us that the room steward was reluctant to talk before he finally made up the story, so he must have had some kind of deal with that other guy. I found it really off-putting that the employees would take part in the harassment of their guests by guides who are supposed to be professionals and then make up a lie to cover it up. The only reason I knew they were trying to cover it up is because our guide happened to be right there when we went to find out what was going on.

Unforgettable cultural and natural experience with Masaai Simba Camp

Reviewed By Jelmer v

Simba Camp was a beautiful experience. The camp just looks beautiful, where huts and banda's are build between all the green(trees and bushes). We slept in a beautiful Banda with shower and toilet. We were very warm welcomed by the Masaai who run the camp. The nature walks during evening and morning make for an authentic experience, seeing wild animals from short distance (such as giraffes, zebra's, gerenuk and even a puff adder!!). Another authentic experience was our dialogue with the elders (Masaai). They gave us a true insight in the Masaai culture. Moreover a trip to the Amboseli park was well arranged. And besides all these wonderful experiences we loved the relaxing atmosphere at Simba camp. Learned to play Mancala from the staff and played rummicub with them. The food was amazing with everyday another menu. We cannot wait to get back!
