Amazing hostel - a must for travellers in El Calafate!

Reviewed By Amy D

We stayed at this hostel for 3 nights while in El Calafate and we didn’t want to leave, it was easily one of the best hostels we stayed in while travelling around South America. The place has such a lovely vibe whether you are travelling solo or as a group. Great common area to socialise in, lots of young people, other travellers and staff are super friendly. The panoramic views from the common area and garden are amazing especially when the weather is nice. The BBQ was also so delicious (the best lamb we tried in Patagonia) and felt like we were in a top rated restaurant rather than a hostel! Cannot recommend this place highly enough - thank you America del Sur for an a

Very close to the start of both hiking trails

Reviewed By Jollyshandy

The hostel is a bit of a walk from the bus station, but very near to the start of the two hiking trails (Cerro Torre and Laguna de Los Tres). It has clean beds, clean rooms and good paid breakfasts. Anna from the front desk is always friendly and helpful. I always consult her on the best time to do the sunrise hike, doable daily hikes etc and she always gave me good advice, and I got good sunrise pictures thanks to her. Breakfasts are not included, but the paid breakfasts have big portion and quite tasty. After I took their breakfasts, I had enough energy to do the long day hikes. Dinner portion is huge too, and the restaurants get pretty busy from 630pm onwards. There is a live TV in the dining hall that shows the real time condition of De Los Tres, which is pretty cool. The exchange rate offered for USD is competitive, I made the mistake of exchanging my money in EZE airport Banco De Nation, and got less than favourable exchange rate. There is no need to. Just change here will do. If you are doing longer hikes like the Huemel Circuit, you can stick an invitation near the reception to gather more trekkers if you prefer a bigger crowd. The reception can also help you arrange for remis to Hostel El Pillar or other areas. There are supermarkets, equiupment rental shops, waffles joint nearby, all walkable distance. There are also trucks selling super sweet cheeries along the road nearby, i bought a kilo after tasting them, so sweet. I like this hostel, and will probably return next time.

A view that leaves you frozen

Reviewed By F5191RAcarlag

The best thing about El Calafate is that you can do all kinds of activities, from bike rides along the coast, relaxing in a hotel that has a spa overlooking the lake, long walks that do not need a guide through the hills, or the best excursion and a must-see in Los Glaciares Park, where you can see the Glacier in its maximum splendor! Truly a wonder of nature!

A very comfortable, clean and homely place to stay. Our trip to the Glacier was amazing and this accommodation was the icing on top. The owner,Conrrado and his wife make all the difference , providing home cooked pastries and savouries for breakfast and help with booking trips and making everything so easy. Everyone is made to feel very welcome We used the hotel bikes and went around the Lake and stopped for lunch in a lovely bar

useless staff, okay hostel

Reviewed By Christine F

I'd give them zero points, if it would be possible... Was there with my bf in late March; we had no reservation. Already when we arrived there, we couldn't really figure out, whether the people on the terraces were guests, staff or friends of staff (later on we knew: staff and friends) Even though we were obviously passing these smokers next to the front door to go inside to reception, none of the staff said hi. We walked outside a couple of minutes later and asked the people, if someone knew, where we could find staff. "Oh, I am the receptionist" (one of the people who we were passing to get in). This was still okay, the main problem followed later on: We were brought to our room and assinged beds. When we came back to the room later that day, my stuff was gone - other guests were assigned the exact same bed (with my stuff on). Alright, this can happen, new receptionist assigned me to a new bed. Came back again about three hours afterwards, guess what: My things were gone again and the bed I was assigned to was given to someone else, again. Had a a bed for a night, went on a trip and came back in the later afternoon - my stuff was gone again!! Worst thing about staff: They didn't seem to care about it and not a single sorry came from them. The next morning I wanted to wash some clothes by hand, and asked at reception for a bucket and wether it's alright, if I washed it in that bucket in the showerroom. "yeah, yeah, that's fine". Ten minutes later a very angry housekeeping lady told me I wasn't allowed to do this. So yeah, if the staff of Nakel Yenu would get organised and maybe discuss whatguests are allowed to and what not, future travellers might be happy about it. The hostel itself is alright: I liked how the kitchen was in a separate building, no food odours in the bedrooms. The water pressure was quite little in the female showers. At the guys' it was apparently better. Hostel is a tad out of the city centre, but definitely walkable and about halfway between the centre and the bus station.

Myself and a friend stayed for 4 nights at Hostel Kaiken. We couldn't have asked for a better base to explore all the trekking routes around El Chalten. Jorge greeted us on our first night and was very informative. The house was warm and clean, the beds were comfortable and the big kitchen was a plus!

Pick somewhere else

This hotel is run down and over priced for what it is. I changed hotels when I was in El Calafate and I wish I'd stayed in the other place the whole time (the other place was nicer and cheaper). The upsides are the rooms are super toasty, my room was in a sweet garden, which was nice to sit in after a long day and breakfast was good. The Hospitality was also good. Also there is a little market just beside it. Fyi the private rooms are on the other side of the building where reception is.

Some pluses and some minuses

Reviewed By Giel1985

Stayed for 3 nights in a room with private bathroom and there’s both some pluses and minuses we experienced. Our room was very spacious and clean, and the location of the hostel is excellent (just outside the busy part of town). The place was also nice and quiet in the evenings and nights. Both the bed and the shower weren’t too comfy though, but okayish for a few nights. Quite a big disadvantage is that you can only pay in cash. ATMs only allow you to draw small amounts of cash against high costs, which means that there’s a lot of “extra” costs involved.
