Milhouse Hostel Avenue

This popular hostel is housed in a beautifully restored 1905 mansion and located on one of the most important avenues in the city - Avenida de Mayo. It features modern facilities and cool rooms, all with private bathrooms. This hostel resembles a boutique hotel, the real difference being the price tag! Inside there are different areas to suit all needs and preferences - you can relax on the roof terrace with a refreshing cocktail or simply chill out on one of the many sofas and watch TV, read a book or use the Internet. It also boasts a large bar area which is perfect for meeting fellow travellers, watching various sports events, playing pool, using the book exchange or having a bite to eat from our tasty menu. But the true asset of Milhouse Hostel Avenue is the friendly, well informed and energetic team working here. Typical Portenos, they are passionate about helping you discover Buenos Aires. Ask at our travel agency for escapades around Argentina and find out all you can do in the city, from tango shows, to football matches, nightclubbing or taking a walking/biking tour.

Disrespectful

Reviewed By maresz

The hostel is a party hostel which is fine, although blasting music until 5 am is a bit much I think when you can hear it clearly in the rooms, but that part is fine if you are looking to party. The bathrooms are not the cleanest especially when you have to use one of the common area ones the morning after the party, but that is also understandable as it is stated that it is a party hostel. The staff are nice. What is not nice and borderline illegal is that they DO NOT allow a foreigner to pay in Argentinian pesos in Argentina. They said I must pay USD as that is the policy. I told them I do not have any but I am willing to pay the same in pesos (I realize there are two conversion rates, but I still only had pesos with me). So I was forced to pay with a credit card which as I imagined ended up about 50% more than what it would have been in pesos. Of course the next day they said "I could pay in pesos but it will be more expensive because of the taxes". First, this is BS, taxes are not 80% are they? Second, I was quite clearly denied the option to pay in pesos and was told to talk to the manager the next day if I didn't like it. In the end, as we are talking about one night, the price difference wasn't huge. However, I would have paid the higher price in pesos if that were my only option. I understand the difficulties with the peso, inflation and the exchange rate, but to obligate me to pay in a foreign currency (that I don't have and that is not the currency of my country we they kept saying) is ridiculous. Next time you can also ask for people to pay in gold coins or with feathers. This policy is quite clear. Most guests are in their early 20s who come to party and have no clue about the exchange rates. So they rip them off. An Argentinian paid 1600 pesos for the same bed that I paid 13 USD for. It is not the difference in money, but the principal. You rip people off because you have 200 guests a night who all have a good time partying. So you will still have a good review everywhere even if you maintain this discriminatory policy. If you don't believe me, just try paying in pesos (the currency of Argentina) and see what happens. The staff however was nice, but combine with not being able to sleep at all and almost vomiting in the bathroom in the morning from the odors, I think this has been possibly my worst hostel experience ever. I have been traveling for years. I am sure the hostel will not respond to the question about paying in pesos as this is an illegal practice, so of course they will not admit to it here. Suite yourself.

Ideal Social Hostel

We are located in the city center, close to all subways and buses. We offer a free night every 4 nights, continental breakfast and free wireless internet in the rooms and shared areas. We have two kitchens, patio with grill and give free Tango classes in our Bar.

Okay hostel, but the guests ruined it for me.

Reviewed By sandy c

I'd give the hostel 3 stars if not for many of the guests. I don't know what they had in common, but they were the most inconsiderate bunch I've ever encountered. I stayed long enough for two sets of people to cycle through my dorm, but no matter who, everybody insisted on lights out and windows shuttered all day. Come 2:00 am it was lights on and yak yak yak until the sun came up (and the blinds were drawn again). Aside from that, the place was OK. The location can't be beat- a block off the main drag, but still a relatively quiet street. The staff are friendly and did whatever they could to help you out. The building itself is old but has lots of character. There is a discrete smoking area and a small patio out back. The hostel is right above a small supermarket, and there are many budget eats nearby. The bathrooms vary in quality. Some are pretty good, some not so good. But I almost never had to wait for one of the better ones, and the showers never ran out of hot water. Also, the cleaners keep them as clean as they can get. The kitchen could use an update, but at least it's there and it functions. Note that the hostel does not offer breakfast- they don't claim to, but some 3rd party booking sites say otherwise. Some dorms have balconies, some open to the hallways. I believe you can choose when you book. The wifi worked most everywhere. All in all, it wasn't the worst place I've stayed, and it's likely the most centrally located hostel in the world. If you really value location and don't require anything too flashy, This may be the place for you.

Short stay in Buenos Aires

Reviewed By James H

A friend and I stayed at the Art Factory in San Telmo for 3 nights as part of a trip around south America and I can thoroughly recommend it. It is a pleasant hostel around 20mins walk from some of the key tourist spots in Buenos Aires through perfectly safe areas. There is an indoor bar area that is open in the evenings and a nice rooftop terrace too. You're not allowed to bring your own drinks in, but the prices in the bar aren't too bad, though we would have liked them to open a bit earlier, I don't think the bar opens until 5.30pm. The reception staff are helpful and can book taxis (agreed rates for things like airport transfers) and suggest places to visit around Buenos Aires. Entry to the building can be a little tricky, someone at reception has to buzz you in and then you'll have to carry luggage up some stairs with a slightly awkward door. Not a huge issue, but a little inconvenient. My friend and I shared a private twin room with a shared bathroom immediately across the corridor. The bedroom was fine, plenty of space and quiet at night and even when our nearest bathroom was occupied there are several more fairly nearby. If/when I ever come back to Buenos Aires I would happily stay here again.

Friendly and quiet hostel

If you want a noisy hostel ....go somewhere else! Although this hostel is central and next to a busy road, it is well run, cleaned daily, the beds are made by staff and friendly. The staff speak plenty of languages. It is very cheap. There were enough lockers in my room and plenty of space.

A really nice stay

Reviewed By croninbarry21

My girlfriend and I stayed here for a week and it was excellent. We stayed in a semi-private room and it was like a hotel room for €30 a night. The location is excellent for exploring the city with bus and metro only a short walk away. Plus it's in walking distance to most areas of the city anyway. There is a lovely front room and open area upstairs for chilling out and a nice kitchen for making food.

I stayed 2 nights and during these 2 nights i heard a man screaming constantly at nights, he was screaming like a drugged person and i couldnt lock my door just like other guests. Its a scary hostel and you can understand it when you see how uninteresed is the reception, how dirty are the kitchen and the bathroom. They didn't even ask for my passport nor any identification when i arrive there. You shouldnt stay there if you want to sleep in peace. It was like an horror movie!

This one is in the heart of Buenos Aires, you can easily go to bars, malls, and stores around the area. The room was good but not great. The bed was noisy and kinda old, but the bathroom was clean and roomy. The commum areas were very equipped and pretty, with a lot of usefull tools. About the staff, they were friendly and helpfull with all our needs.

I expected much more!?

Reviewed By I8543VYdanielag

I know this hostel for so long trough Hostelworld because I worked with tourism and it was one of the best hostels by that time … I was excited to stay here, but I stayed only for one nite. Making the booking was so hard, website and WhatsApp are not manage by the same people so prices and availability change the same day and all the time for the same month. The common areas in general are dirty, in the hall in front many flyers, papers and trash all around like abandoned place. The first receptionist that checked me in ( I think nico is his name but I may be wrong ) charged me the room and didn't talk to me at all about hostel basic things, I had to ask for everything, I believe he was so busy with the computer and EarPods … That same day he opened my door with another card key, I had a private room on my own and hostel wasn’t that crowd, in fact it was almost empty when I got there because COVID and Argentina’s restrictions… everyone can make a mistake but this made me feel so unsafe somehow. When I informed about this situation to the other receptionist ( a man like 60/70 years old who didn’t know anything related to the hostel) he treated me very bad saying that I’m not well educated because the way I “talked to him” ( I know I was upset but I didn’t disrespect this man at all ) There are 2 big trash bin but they mix everything and goes in the same trash(plastic/organic) The room was ok, clean enough but as I said before i expected more art and more details like the old pictures in the website. Hostel atmosphere : people that were living or staying there were nice, also another employee , they made family dinners almost every nite and coocked Arabic typical food and the asado argentino ( barbecue) everything smelled so good! Overall it’s an ok place for one or two 2 nights. I really hope they can improve this hostel because the estructure is awesome! With a big basement with games and a lot of space to do yoga and exercise.

Travelers and locals mingle in the trendy bars, restaurants, clubs and green spaces of this district. Here, you’ll feel right at home among the parks and plazas of Buenos Aires. ROBBERIES/ROBADOS

Reviewed By 147briannab

WARNING TO TRAVELERS! ROBBERIES IN THE DORMS! Two days ago, I was staying in a shared dorm when I noticed that my lock was gone, the metal where the lock had been was bent, and all of the money was gone. I also checked the other lockers in the room and saw that the two other lockers occupied with possessions had been attempted to be robbed and had the metal bent and cut marks on the locks, but luckily, the thief/thieves weren’t able to break into them. Immediately after realizing what happened, I went into the elevator to go downstairs to talk to the front desk. While in the elevator there were two maids, and I frantically told them that someone robbed me, and they responded that they were on the other side of the building which I found as odd as I never assumed it was them or accused them. Everyone staying in our room this week has been robbed, has been attempted to be robbed, or has left the room because they’ve been so scared after this incident. After talking to the front desk and the others staying in my room, I found out that 3 people in the same room had been robbed in the past few weeks and someone else in another room (these are just the people that we know). Each of us was robbed between 2 pm – 5 pm, the locks all had been cut off, and the cleaning staff had been in our rooms cleaning during the time the robberies occurred. Also, we were told by staff that this is the only hall that currently doesn’t have a working security camera. All of us who have been robbed have been told that Selina couldn’t be held responsible even though it was clear that there was a pattern of robberies. Even one of the victims from a few weeks ago knew that the cleaning staff and a manager had been the only people in the room (via CCTV footage), and none of this was ever investigated by the administration.

Not great, not terrible...

Reviewed By michty6

Not good but not terrible. Rooms are ok but have giant windows with no curtains so are very bright. The air con points right in your face. Wifi doesnt work in the upstairs rooms, you have to go downstairs and connect to the 'downstairs'wifi. Breakfast is ok - coffee, bread and a piece of cake. They make you eat it in the kitchen though, rather than their lovely outdoor square. Also they let people smoke on the kitchen balcony, which blows into the kitchen in your face, which isnt great if you hate smoke. Bathrooms are just about passable - a bit dirty. Price is about in line with BA prices but probably too expensive for what you get...
