The Bar Convent is England's oldest living convent, established in 1686 as a school for girls. Today, the Grade I Listed building is one of York's most unique places to stay, promising peace, quiet and friendly service in a heritage setting. Our rooms are largely en-suite, with a few lower-priced rooms on the top floor with shared bathroom facilities. There is an award-winning café on site, as well as an state-of-the-art Exhibition on the convent's fascinating history. Just around the corner from York Rail Station, and only minutes into the centre of town, The Bar Convent's location is second-to-none and provides easy access to the city's famous walls. A large number of restaurants, pubs and bars are nearby. The Bar Convent is proud to provide York's warmest welcome, to those of all faiths and none.

Beautiful and amazing!!

Reviewed By markjY8353TK

The Bar Convent is in a fantastic location for visiting York City and is very reasonably priced!! I was staying in room 305, which is in the attic. The room was very nice, but on two nights I heard a noice, which sounded like someone pacing the room. The noice could have been from the room next door or a sister from the past looking over me? After informing the sisters, they moved me to a larger room on the second floor with a double bed and on suite, with no extra charge. My full breakfast was amazing!! I asked how they kept it so hot, they said it was from an old tradition that was top secret!! The sisters can’t do enough to make your stay as perfect as they are!!

Perfect place for family ages 6-65

we were a family of 9 between 2 family rooms. spent 3 nights just before the jubilee weekend here as our base for doing all things Scarbados. perfect location, parking no problem (you get a pass £1 per day to use outside the hotel and surrounding roads) Vicky and her husband were very hospitable and the lass helping with breakfast too. Breakfast was fabulous all requirements catered for. They just need a heads up the night before on basic things like black pudding and pancakes to minimise waste, which in the current climate is understandable. we used the Bar and pool table that is a nice little communal area. The rooms were perfect for us as we were out all day so not much lounging around had. Would I return.....yes, we've provisionally booked for next year. thanks ?

This hotel has quirky decor. We stayed in a small double seaview room, and found it to be more spacious than expected. The room comes complete with a mini fridge containing a small bottle of milk and complimentary water. (Also a chargeable range of snacks and drinks.) It wise to note that the bathrooms are without ventilation, but the shower was great. The restaurant is excellent We enjoyed the continental breakfast selection that had something to suit everyone We also dined here, and enjoyed our meal.. The Retreat was a great place to chill, and we enjoy the complimentary tea and cake. (Please note are dog lovers not owners.) But we love this hotel.

Great staff shame about everything else

Reviewed By XXXXXXPE

The real shame about this hotel, is the total waste of fantastic staff. The room whilst clean (and to be fair the bed is comfortable) is worse than basic and only good for a single nights stay, as there is no where to put any clothes, so you have to live out of your case, that can only be stored on the floor. There was 1 large towel and 1 small towel in the bathroom (the room was booked for 2 people,) and the fan in the bathroom was laboured and chunky. Where this hotel really looses out however is the food. Chips are like dried cardboard (very cheap frozen ) and most (battered cod, ok, but that was all) of the food we had over 2 meals was bland and tasteless. Marstons may claim that this is a budget hotel, and at £90 per night it I suppose it could be deemed so, however it really is not worth that amount. I recommend you only stay here as a last resort, for one night, and eat somewhere else.

The Inn South Stainley

The Inn at South Stainley, located between Harrogate and Ripon, is a stylish country pub with rooms. Following a six-month refurbishment, we opened August 2017, not just as an atmospheric pub and restaurant in Ripon but also with a separate function suite, making it the perfect venue for dining and socialising and also to host your event for up to 160 people. Our large, mature gardens are the perfect place to watch the world go by and the sun go down and make a lovely backdrop for photographs of your special event. We mix the best ingredients with great personalities and atmospheric settings to create memorable experiences. Our seafaring heritage fuses with a timeless, pub charm to bring light and fresh seafood dishes and hearty, classic meat dishes to your table. And all enjoyed within a traditional pub setting, finished with a modern twist making us a great pub with rooms in Harrogate.

One night visit

Reviewed By Helena S

We stayed here for 1 night on our way home from getting married in gretna green. We booked the day before we arrived and got an amazingly cheap price for the room and service we received. We stayed in room 12 which is a superior king room with a patio and they had put a complimentary bottle of wine chilling in an ice bucket in for us on arrival, so lovely of them. It was spotlessly clean with a wonderful shower. The bed was super comfortable, however a mattress topper as well as a protector would have made it perfect as this would have covered the zip and link feature (joins 2 singles as a superking). This is so minor though and did not affect our sleep at all. The pub and gardens are immaculate. The breakfast was delicious. The staff are attentive and polite and really are a credit to the inn. Thank you for our wonderful stay .
