We have been travellers to Thailand for over 10 years, had visited almost all the islands on the Andaman but had never come to Trang city. Trang is not a touristic city for "Farangs" (Foreigners), only for Thais and there are not too much options of hotels. Trang is still used by Foreigners as a transit spot on the way to the Andaman islands. But it is well worth a visit! So, this year we decided to come. Shifted the plane by the train and had 16 hours of an amazing journey along the green South! After a search into the hotels of Trang city, most were full due the Chinese Kin Jai Festival, I lastly decided for the Garden Hill Mansion Hotel. Have read some reviews (some good, some not good written by Thais) and saw the pictures. Looked nice and new. From the street you see a beautiful sunset coloured building. Rooms are basic but nice, not very large. Despite having read some Thai guests reviews that I really did't like and would make me think twice about "book or not book", even though I booked a room for 6 nights. At the check-in we were asked to leave 500THB in cash as a deposit. Went to Room 502. There's an INFO on the wall next to the key holder and the light switch: A PRICE LIST of all items in the room, in case guests break or damage anything. Makes guests feel like they're not very welcome. In the bathroom: the tap of the sink was swinging a lot and was very difficult to open. After, we realized the sink was completely clogged. Water was not going down, not even 1 cm. (Both of us brushed our teeth in the shower) In the shower, the water was hot for 5min and the light of the heater was suddenly off. My husband learned that the main switch on the electrical board was cuting off the energy every 2 minutes. So he turned it on for more than 10 times while I was in the shower. In the balcony there is a dish washer type sink. The tap was hangged and swinging outside the hole. There is no telephone in the room and as the night shift Staff of reception would not understand english, we reported the day after. We asked reception to fix both taps, unclog the sink and fix the heater. Manager/owner unclogged the sink only. On the third day none of the taps and the heater were fixed. We asked to change room and so we moved to 507. Again, both taps were swinging a lot which turned to be very difficult to open and use them. Also the pipe of the outside sink had no protection and when we opened the tap, the water would be dripping to the floor. Immediately informed the Housekeeping Staff and Mrs Noon was exceptional, she fixed the pipe at that moment. On day 4, both taps were still not fixed. On that night we brought food from the Market to eat in the room. I asked reception to provide us one table for eating and after dinner we would give it back (there are tables on the 6th floor, where there is a large room for meetings/meals/events). So, the Staff immediately took the phone to speak with manager/owner. I was told that they don't allow people to eat in the room (really??!!) and that the only table they could offer is the one that is outside the entrance of the hotel. He even dared to tell me that I should clean up the table and chairs before eating (really?!?!?) due the heavy rain. That was the moment I realized how disrespectful he was to me. Anyway, we had dinner in the room. Finally, next day both taps were fixed/changed. I did not informed reception about the bottom of the door in the bathroom, it is severely destroyed like it was bitten by an angry dog. I remembered about the 500THB deposit and...are these the conditions that the manager/owner offers his guests? He wants money but shows no care about the facilities...and then you stay at any "Centara Hotel" that never ever asked us for a deposit...that really makes you think about things... Before booking this hotel I think anyone should be aware that: 1- rooms have no maintenance at all ("What for?" when 99% of the guests are Thais and 99% of them will never complain even when they are being impaired...), manager/owner will act only after many attempts from the guest 2- all Staff are under control by fear (there is a Staff woman at reception that is always trembling in fear when manager or wife are around. One of the times I spoke to her about the taps and she started trembling more. It was so uncomfortable for me) 3- manager/owner has a full live coverage of all areas to control guests and employees at all time 4- there is a mirror behind reception that hides the office from where the owners control guests and employees without being noticed (smart,hein?!...) sometimes if you ask to speak with manager, you are told the manager is not there, but he is behind that mirror 5- instructions to Housekeeping are clear: room with 2 guests provide 2 shower towels (guests don't need hand towels) + 1 shampoo (20ml) + 2 soaps 6- they deliver a wrong information about the BREAKFAST on every booking sites. When you book online they inform that the Breakfast is available but has to be payed at the hotel. THEY DON'T SERVE BREAKFAST HERE. 7- manager runs the hotel TO SHOW EVERYONE the BIG MANSION (that gives the name to the hotel), their dwelling site. POSITIVE POINTS: THE STAFF. Mr Ball from reception is so professional and beside not speaking fluent english he is ready to help in any occasion, he's very polite, smiling at all times and very efficient. The other Staff in reception (whose name I don't know) is very quite, she doesn't speak at all and she's always trembling, acting like she's being observed at all times and she fears the owners. ALL Housekeeping Staff are amazing. We must make a special thanks to Mrs Noon for being such a dedicated, professional, prompt and efficient person, if you ask her for something you need she will think on a solution right away. Each day she made us feel welcome with her smile and helped us even about the places we should visit in Trang. After repeatedly requesting wipes/towel for the Lobby Toilet, I asked the manager in front of some staff (I did it on purpose) if he usually washes the hands and how does he dry them. This is a hotel, not a home, not a market. Hosting and respecting guests is something that manager should never ever forget to do. From then on he stopped greeting us with a "Sawadee krab". Once the Express train was full, we had to stay 1 more night at the hotel. I gently asked manager/owner if he could call the Train station so I could confirm about the tickets and he simply turned his face to the computer behind the reception. A very good sign of a well educated person. Honestly, I would never ever recommend this hotel to anyone. The owners don't know how to run a hotel. They act like policemen, they don't make anyone feel comfortable.

Be careful - scam

I booked this hotel on Expedia and it seems they are working together as the hotel is not open. On arrival you will be met by a vicious dog at the gates them a senior gentleman comes to advise they are not open. Then he tells you to cancel the booking and they will c9nfirm with Expedia. I did that and called Expedia and of course once you cancel then there is no refund I therefore lost the full amount of my booking to this scam. Naturally Expedia will investigate and advise within 14 days - needless to say nothing heard. The only good to come out of this is that I did not have to stay as the reception area behind the gates is disgusting- nothing like the photos.

This is a smaller operation, family run. Some 20 bungalows and rooms in a beautifully landscaped beachside psrk. The restaurant will go out of its way to cater for your demands, given sufficient notice. Full bar, massage bicycles, the lot. The wooden Seaview bungalows could do with some maintenance TLC, but nothing serious. Kind of adds to its charm. Staff is very friendly and helpful.
