The Crown

The Crown is a 17th Century Coaching Inn on the thriving independent high street of Uppingham serving fantastic fresh, seasonal food along with a great range of real ales and premium drinks, and local produce. The Inn dates back to 1739, when two separate dwellings were altered to make the one building as you see today, although parts of the original dwellings date back to pre 1530. Under new business ownership in 2020, the pub and rooms have undergone an extensive and sympathetic renovation bringing an updated and relaxed atmosphere where the focus is on a warm welcome and quality experience for all. This welcome extends to our beloved canine friends who are welcome in the pub area at all times and can be accommodated with prior agreement in the bedroom. Uppingham boasts a thriving independent high street where you can while away the hours browsing its many boutiques, antique shops and galleries. Well placed to explore the surrounding areas you will find much to do whether it be a walk in the beautiful countryside a historic trip to Rockingham Castle and Burghley House, or a spot of shopping in the beautiful towns of Stamford and Oakham. If you are looking for something more adventurous Rutland Water is on your doorstep for cycle hire, sailing and other activities both on and off the water. Rutland may be the smallest in England but true to its motto 'multum in parvo' there really is much in little.

Mid week lunch and what a disappointment

Reviewed By kwehlule

I had a Cold, tiniest tandoori chicken flatbread with what appeared to be red cabbage and carrots on the side. Chicken was dry and only a few bites of it. There was suppose to be feta cheese but I didn’t taste or see it. The portion was extremely small and the flatbread was like eating cardboard. I’m sorry but I’m not coming back anytime soon

2 nights stay

Reviewed By Wildheart65

We had a large spacious and clean room for two nights. Very quiet the first night but the second night there was a very loud talker next door unfortunately. I think he spent his evening on the phone! The room wasn't serviced and another guest said you had to ask for it to be done because of Covid. I missed that bit, perhaps we should have been asked if we wanted it serviced? Chris was a card. Got me with his ketchup haha. Breakfast was delicious. The pub is lovely, well kept and cosy in a pretty setting. They don't do food on a Monday so we had to go to the next village pub. Would happily stay again.

The White Horse

Complete Disappointment

Reviewed By rw537

A deluxe room had been booked. The White Horse definition of this was a room where we had o request the removal of a dirty tray with previous occupants cups and tea bags, a carpet that had not seen a hoover that day, a pillow without a cover and no hairdryer. We were told that breakfast would be at 0930 (no request as to when we might like or need it!). We duly arrived to building at 0930 to find it locked with no sign of any staff. We knocked to no avail, went for a short walk, returned to knock again with still no sign of life or aroma of cooking. At 1015 we packed and left ! A very poor bed with absolutely no breakfast. The White Horse is set in a lovely location but it is letting down the village in which it is located.

Not your average village pub.

Reviewed By Tim V

We stayed there for one night over the Jubilee weekend. External and internal decoration are bright and clean. The staff are welcoming, friendly and efficient. The food is definitely a cut above the usual pub menus, both in content and presentation, without being pretentious. Highly recommended as a place to eat. Lovely breakfast with fresh flowers on the table, and home-made jam.

Lovely 2 day stay

Reviewed By F9062QNchrisw

We came here for a Sunday to Tuesday stay. Check In was easy, met by friendly staff and the amenities explained. Our only slight surprise was that they only do cooked breakfast over the weekend only and a breakfast bag during the week. So although breakfast was not what we expected it was still very nice. The room itself was small, functional, clean, tidy and comfortable. We were told in check in that rooms are advertised with bath only and we understand why - the water pressure was awful for a shower, but the bath was slow to run but pleasant enough. The building itself is very old, rustic and charming. Decor is in keeping with the building. Evening meal was lovely, great service and great tasting food. Staff here were always friendly and willing to help. We’d highly recommend either staying here or stopping off for a drink or meal.
