The Market Tavern and Lodge

The Market Tavern was taken over, refurbished and reopened in March 2016. A family friendly run pub restaurant and lodge with a smart, fun atmosphere serving a wide variety of lagers, real ales, spirits and soft drinks. A tremendous wine list accompanies the eclectic food offering. Great food in the bar and Steakhouse. Live bands play some Friday evenings, and it's very popular with the locals and visitors to the area. We are located in the centre of town and a two minute walk to the castle and gardens. The Steakhouse has opened to rave reviews, serving amazing Northumbrian steaks, and local dishes.

Room at the top of the house up a number of flights of stairs. The decor was dated with orange velvet curtains. There was no shelves in the bathroom to put personal toiletries on and the towel rail fell off the wall when towels placed on it. No hooks or chair to put your clothes on in the bathroom . Only liquid soap in bathroom and no shower gel provided . No water, no sweetners, no decaf coffee or tea. Room above kitchens so food smells.

My husband and I had an overnight stay in the Lookout. The non contact check in was very easy and passing by staff were extremely helpful. The room itself was absolutely beautiful, couldn’t fault it. The bed was very comfy! Despite the building work happening outside we couldn’t hear a thing. The breakfast staff were fab and very happy to help with dietary requirements. Couldn’t fault the breakfast. Can’t wait to come back and stay!

James Bond experience at the Bondgate!

Reviewed By holidayheadtraveller

Excellent experience here, v little to criticise. I felt safe, it was quiet,I was really comfortable, slept brilliantly, immaculately clean. Everything I needed including chocs and toffees :-) Theparking is not for the faint hearted! There are 2 ways in - one through the archway next to the Plough or a little further day there is a narrow entrance which has quite a narrow corner, but is manageable - just ! But there are plenty of other Carparks if you are not feeling brave !

We were walking along the northeast coast for 4 days starting off in Alnwick and Embleton was our first overnight stay. The Bluebell Inn is a lovely little hotel run by the amazing Anna who couldn't do enough for us during our stay. The continental breakfast the next morning would put some big hotels to shame with the choice available as would the delicious evening meal the night before. A very friendly hotel which we will definitely be returning to soon.

Lovely stay

Smashing stay at the Hallow & Crux, room was fabulous. Harry Potter themed but very subtlety done with a grown up feel. This is actually part of the Dirty Bottles hotel which perhaps should be a bit clearer online? Also, website could do with showing that breakfast is included in the price. Staff very friendly and helpful Food good pub grub. Decent sized breakfast Small suggestion perhaps a stand/shelf in the Chamber’s bathroom for a wash bag? Alnwick itself was great for food and shopping. Lots of independent shops perfect for Christmas presents all very friendly

The shower needs updating ceiling black with damp in both rooms also damp around shower doors no hot water until 7.30 in morning either ! Our room was at the front of the pub and it was quite noisy but my daughter in law room was at the back the noise was really bad. On the plus side the food and service was good. Such a shame

Reviewed By helengF2569JJ

My husband, two kids, puppy and I ate here last night. We had booked an overnight stay at another hotel but they had ran out of hot food by the time we went to order. Everywhere was booked up as we walked along the Main Street until we got to The Schooner. Walking in, the place looked lovely and modern. The outside area was also huge and looked great. However, it was pretty much deserted apart from a couple already eating and another table of four ordering food. It seemed strange that it was so quiet when everywhere else was full, but we hadn’t read any reviews. After reading them now I am quite shocked. The food was delicious, maybe a tad salty for my husband, but non the less it was lovely. Jav, the barman/waiter, is such a lovely lovely lad. So welcoming and friendly. It seems such a shame that this place has had such bad reviews and people will be put off. I really hope they can sort the problems with the accommodation (we didn’t stay in a room so can’t personally comment) and they get more custom. It really could be a goldmine as it’s huge inside and so is the beer garden. Maybe some funding from an investor could help? Fingers crossed for them and we will definitely go back for a drink and food during the summer holidays,
