Helgolander Kegelrobben

Reviewed By David P

The archipelago consists of two Islands, the main Island Helgoland and smaller Düne (the Dune). The populated Helgoland is the place where you can observe seabirds. The earless seals lounge around on sandy Beaches of Düne. The small ferryboat cruises between the two Islands every half an hour. Accommodation possibilities are limited on the Düne. There are a few bungalows and a small campsite on the small island but zou can use many guest houses and small hotels on the Helgoland. The Islands are accesible either by ships from ports on the north-west german coast or by a small plane (an airstrip on the Düne).

Lange Anna

A single, finger-like rock formation that is covered by breeding sea birds in the spring.

Although you can take a 'bus' up to the upper island most people walk and whilst not a big distance its quite arduous. The gannet colony, the spectacular cliffs all go to make this unforgettable - providing its a nice day which, fortunately the island does get a fair number of!

Halunder Jet

Reviewed By Westcoast8 - Germany

I have been on the Halunder Jet three times. The first time the company failed to inform us of the cancellation of the return trip so we found ourselves stranded on the island. It was a stressful experience and only due to our own alertness we were able to make it back to the Mainland in time for our long time planned (and paid for) wellness weekend.
My second experience with the Halunder Jet was also a little stressful, but not due to the company's lack of communication. The ferry was cancelled due to the weather conditions and they exchanged my ticket to the departure the following day. The crossing was smooth and during the crossing there were waiters offering drinks and snacks from the snackbar. The chairs are not terribly comfortable, but luckily the trip usually takes less than four hours depending on the weather. The bathrooms are clean, and for history buffs there is a commentary broadcast on the speakers about landmarks and interesting sites on either site of the Elbe.
All in all the Halunder Jet is a good alternative to the other Ferries and the small aircraft which flies to Düne, the small island right next to Helgoland.

Hummerbuden

Amazing how close good and bad are. Most of these "Hummerbuden" offer good deals and some provide local information for free or a donation. However, don´t consider having food or drinks there. This is a rip-off place. You pay up to 30% less for "fish in a bun" in more "downtown".

Festung Helgoland

Reviewed By S G - Hamburg, Germany

It was a great tour. We were lucky as we had the most possible authentic tour with a man who had to use the bunkers when he was a kid. He was looking for shelter in the bunkers several times with his family. Amazing what all was installed. And in total they built 13.9 km of bunker corridors, which is especially remarkable as the island is only ca. 1 km2 in size.

Museum Helgoland

Reviewed By Chenahusky - London, United Kingdom

For people staying on Helgoland, the local museum is well worth a visit. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The layout of the main building and small houses with different exhibits, makes it charming. There are exhibits on the history of the island, its postal history, going back to Queen Victoria, when the island was owned by the British. There are also art displays from the present day. In the lower floor there is an interesting geological display.
