The Wasserkuppe is with 950 meters the highest mountain of Hessen and internationally known as the "mountain of gliders" for gliding and paragliding. The mountain in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön is an interesting holiday destination for young and old - in the middle of Germany, at any time of the year: the summer toboggan runs are not only popular with children. Other highlights are the hiking trails, the climbing forest, the gliding museum, the Radom on the summit, the aviation monument, the particularly clear starry sky and many other sights in the area such as the Red Moor, the baroque city of Fulda or the memorial site "Point Alpha" on the former inner-German border. In winter, snow-covered floodlit slopes, cross-country ski runs, sledge runs and the snowkite spot attract winter sports enthusiasts to the Wasserkuppe. Directly on the mountain there are restaurants, hotels and a holiday village.

This is a great location for a long weekend especially if entranced by aviation. The history of flying here dates back to the early twentieth century and today it is a great place to watch aviation - paragliders, gliders, hang gliders, radio-controlled model aircraft and soaring hawks hunting for prey. On the north side is a theme park with rides that are probably great for young families with a cheap restaurant/cafeteria offering traditional German fare and beer. The site also offers the excellent gliding museum, the great value Deutscher Flieger hotel and the outstanding Peterchens Mondfahrt restaurant. We'll be back.
