We visited BHSP as a stop along a tour of the lower Keys in February. Much of the Atlantic side of the park is still recovering from the 2017 hurricane season. Would definitely recommend visiting this park if in the Keys and especially once the area has recovered.

This our 4th trip in a year and half. We have brought our grandkids as well as just my husband and I. John and Katie are very knowledgeable and just fun to be around. I am glad Looe Key has been able to rebound after Irma. We visited in Nov. 2017 and Katie took us out on the small boat as the canal was in shambles. It was a pleasant surprise to see the great shape the canal was in on 3/16/18. Keep up the good work, you will be seeing us again.

Fourteen square mile natural habitat of white tailed Key deer.
Just driving around the refuge is a pleasure. If you want, get out and walk a short distance to the Blue Hole. If you would like a longer walk go check out the Watson Trail and learn about the different plant communities of Big Pine Key. There aren't many places to hike in the Keys so take advantage of this wonderful place. Don't forget that it is illegal to feed, water, or harass the Key Deer as they are listed as Federally Endangered.

Key deer, alligators and fish gather at this watering hole, formerly a limestone quarry, where fresh water is layered over salt water.
More than just a hole. A small wildlife preserve with good signage and a short walking path. Saw alligators and iguana.

Most folks will not even know they're getting bite by the no-see-ums (until the next day). The park sells a spray which may help with the "no-see-ums" (think it's called "no-gnats"). Calusa Beach is a decent beach. It's not my favorite at Bahia Honda. Still it's a nice beach on a windy day. This is an OUTSTANDING SUNSET location.

Love going on a Saturday or Sunday--there are more vendors on Saturday. Excellent place for fresh fruits and vegetables below super market prices. Shop for orchids, cheep fishing equipment, cheep tools (screws, small parts, etc), teak furniture (carvings and art pieces), novelty wind chimes, men's and women's clothes, hats, purses etc. There's something for everyone. If you go be sure to try the fish sandwiches. The fish tastes fresh and sweet. Many other items on the menu at unbelievably low prices.
