We visited Dondra Head as stop during a day trip around Matara area. It’s the southernmost point of Sri Lanka, which is marked with a sign - selfie yourself there! And... If you’re around, go there! Though it’s unfortunately not possible to enter the Lighthouse. The coast line is beautiful and it has a lagoon with a fantastic picturesque beach to swim.

Our driver stopped here to show us this en route from Ella to Talalla No longer a lighthouse, each landing has pictorial representations of Sri Lanka’s naval past. Easy climb to top rewarded us with lovely ocean views of surrounding area. No one else there and free entry. Definitely worth a stop

The present lighthouse was built in 1952 but these days it is far from the sea as the government is reclaiming it by filling the area with sand. There is nothing but sand all around the area as workers are busy developing the area. There are guns around the lighthouse which are used for the naval gun salutes.

Historical lighthouse which ages more than hundred years. Although you are not permitted to enter inside you can have a closer view from outside. Some boat riding services are also available from here. Few benches are there to sit back and enjoy the view over lagoon. A paid car park is also available here. Only 30rs for a car. Ps: went there again recently(2021/04) and had a boat ride. We got the full package which covered kalllady bridge, batticaloa fort, batticaloa gate and around some islands. It cost us 4000.
