The 9 best Hostels hotel in Ilha Grande, Brazil

May 12, 2023 Tonie Szymanski

So close to Rio de Janeiro, yet so different, Ilha Grande is Brazil’s relaxing, undeveloped paradise. Stepping off the ferry to the island is to disconnect from the outside world. No cars, no banks (bring your money!), no ringing phones. It’s all about relaxing in the sun, sailing, swimming, disappearing into spas and reemerging for fresh seafood at one of the 30 small restaurants.

Clean, tidy hostel next to everything :)

This is one of those rare gems that looks better than the photos! Mainly female staff were so friendly and happy to answer questions. Stayed in the 4 bed girls dorm at the front - if you plan on early nights then maybe not the best choice for you, but once music stops around 11pm, I passed out in the comfy bed. You'll need to sleep with the air con on and grab a fleecy blanket. Shared bathroom was really clean. In fact, the whole place was truly clean. Free welcome drink, also just a really welcoming space. I was pleased to turn up here. Wi fi was good enough to make a whatsapp call back to England for a long chat. Felt very safe walking back late at night, it's right in the middle of everything on the main track through the island but away from the drag of busier restaurants. If you're alone and wary, thought there are many lovely places to stay tucked away up alleyways in the direction of the mountains, this is a better option given its proximity to everything and ease of getting to :) Did have a slight issue with lack of hot water but travelling through Brazil, I think what us English call hot water is hard to come by!

This is a hard one as when we stayed there was just one other person there so it felt empty and a bit out of the way. I am sure it would feel really different when there is a few people about. There is just one bathroom per dorm of 14 and I can imagine this could be a bit annoying. The bathroom door slides and it is really loud. I was up most of the night as the noise from our roof was so loud - maybe a cat or another animal? The location is fine but again lone female travellers may want to look a little bit closer to main bits as there is a short walk up a little hill.

Ilha Grande's Beverly Hills

I've been to this Hostel in the period of the New Years 2020. From the kitchen to the front desk, the staff is young and joyful, always ready to help with a smile and a little chat or story. Easygoing and laidback vibe typical to the hospitality you would find at a hostel. Despite their unfair 24h straight shift, the front desk staff were there to help us at any time. Private toilet in every room (no need to get stuck on queue to use it). Keep in mind that Che Lagarto is a hostel so if you're looking for some privacy and quiet place to rest, that's not the best choice. Rooms, lounge and deck are always clean despite some guests/hosts do not clean their own mess or dirty dishes, the staff will gently do it. It's a place to stay in and go with an.open mind considering you're always talking and sharing stories with other people. Kitchen supplies are deficient. If you cook your own food, it's not recommended to do so in a proper way as the oven has only one set working and there's only one refrigerator to store your meals and beverages. Che Lagarto also fails to provide entertainment at their own deck for the guests/hosts during the night! I've stayed there for 5 days between 29 of december and 02nd of January 2020 and there were none live music, no party or discounted drinks. Thus, people would usually go to bed early or head to the city. One of the best things about this hostel is its location! My room had a beachfront view! There's an amazing deck at the hostel in which you can chill out and have a drink or your breakfast whilst enjoying a jaw dropping view of the landscapes of Ilha Grande. You're just 10min walking away from the centre of Vila Abraao (which is the Ilha Grande's capital) where you can find markets, expensive restaurants, cheap restaurants, typical brazilian gastronomy, finger food, an small hospital and boats to take you around. Besides, Che Lagarto is located right at the beginning of the trek trail to Palmas beach and Lopes Mendes beach. Take it easy for a little while and stay at Che Lagarto and on Ilha Grande and you will get ready to join an adventure!

Affordable, locally-owned hostel!

Reviewed By Melanie D

I loved this place. Ilha Grande is an absolute paradise, but the downtown area is extremely touristy and getting taken over by big-name corporations. This hostel is owned by locals and is just outside the main downtown area, so it's nice and quiet, but close enough to go downtown for dinner. The staff are extremely nice, and very handy with Google translate! Breakfast was an incredible spread of fruits, bread, meats, cheeses, cakes, juices, etc! The room had a great A/C unit which kept us cool after coming in from a long day at the beach. The hostel also offers tours on their own boat! Mario took the three of us out on a day-long beach-hopping trip to 5 different beaches/coves for way less than a private tour from one of the tourist companies would have been! We were really glad we did, when we saw these giant boats full of dozens of tourists rolling up to the same beaches just as we were leaving them!

Bad vibes, boring place and rude staff

Reviewed By maylindas

This hostel has a high standard, bit of a luxury hostel, but it feels empty and has no personality. The staff is rude and doesn't help you with anything at all. Its also weird that in a hostel, where people who dont know eachother stay in the same room, the bathroom is so "open" for everyone in the room to see. I felt no privacy in this place. Switched to Biergarten after one or two nights. Oh and I arrived very early in the morning to check in, but had to pay for breakfast that day anyways, even though I was there before it had even started. And they are very strict with "do not take ANY food for bringing along for the rest of the day" signs. Lol. Sp much for good vpstumer service..

Avarage

The staff was helpful and reasonably nice specially the younger male staff but I'm not sure if they understand safety. There isn't anyone looking after the dorm. The process of checkin in was quite poor. Their system was down therefore I was not able to make any payment for the stay. The next day I got a whatsapp message from the owner chasing me for the payment. If they could make the debit machine work in the first place that would be a smoother process. I wasn't given a key in the first instance they advised they did not have one and they will provide me later. After 2 hours waiting, I decided to go downstairs to chase them for the key. It was still not ready. Ivan asked me to follow him to another village to collect the key from the key maker. I left the room unlock as I did not have a choice. The stairs to the room is very small so good luck if you have a big luggage. Shower pressure was too slow. On the plus side, Wifi was good the location is just right in front of the beach and the bed was comfortable to sleep although you can't sit on the bed if you have the lower part of the bunk bed as the bed is too low easily to hit your head on the bed top. They kindly given me a late check out as my transfer to the main land was not until late afternoon which was nice of him to do that.

Não reservem este local
