This temple is the focal point of the local area and is built upon large rocks that give you a fantastic view over the area. The temple itself is quite small, but contains a dominating Buddha statue, a small open area full of trees, as well as a separate smaller temple on the cliff edge (where we were blessed by the local monk!)
Well worth a visit if staying in the area and with an hour or two to kill.

My husband I chose this operator based on Tripadvisor reviews and were definitely not disappointed. We initially did a full day private safari with Dilan (our driver). Dilan made sure we saw all the different wildlife in the park from elephants, leopards, wild boar, water buffalo and crocodiles to mongoose, eagles, kingfishers and owls.
Dilan had complete respect for the wildlife whilst also ensuring we saw as many animals as possible unlike some of the other operators. He also had a good understanding of the animals' behaviour and as a result we got to see more of the animals (a bit of patience goes a long way!). For example, we had a glimpse of a leopard amongst the bushes and through Dilan's knowledge of other animals giving warning calls and the leopard's routine we got to see the leopard close up.
We are both keen photographers and liked to have time to get some good photos which Dilan respected. At times when he add a slightly better view of the animals he would take photos and videos for me (and they were amazing).
We enjoyed our day with Dilan so much that we requested him for our afternoon safari the next day.
I would definitely use Shehan Safari again.
You won't be disappointed!!

After extensive research, we were glad we picked Santha to be our safari guide. Santha and his family are very nice and genuine people who made our whole experience at Kirinda, Yala and Sri Lanka overall a memorable and beautiful one. His sweet sister Champa owns JC Guest House where we stayed for one night and his brother UP was our great and careful driver. Safaris are in the morning or in the afternoon. The prices are very reasonable. We opted for a private afternoon safari and had an amazing time seeing different kinds of animals including a leopard. Santha is a very knowledgeable and experienced guide and I highly recommend him to everyone wishing to have an incredible safari experience.

Tissa Wewa

The lake, an artificial Reservoir, is thought to have been constructed in the 3rd Century BC, either by Mahanaga of Ruhuna or his successor Yatala Tissa of Ruhuna, in order to irrigate paddy lands and supply water to the flourishing city of Tissamaharama. The lake was restored in 1871 [4] . The embankment (or bund) on the southern shore supports the Tissa-Kataragama road (B464), which is lin

The lake has a charm of its own. however, this really needs to be pepped up by the tourism dept since it is not visited because visitors just see The yala sanctuary and drive off. They need to propagate it and make it a tourist spot.

From Debarawewa (near Tissamaharama) we have visited two national parks, Bundala and Yala, wih Sasindu Safari Jeep Tours. Both trips we had good drivers who showed us the wildlife in the two national parks in the south. The drivers of Sasindu had a lot of patience and knew all the good places to spot elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, monkeys, waterbuffalo's and many beautiful birds. The thornforests and lagoons in Yala are excellent and the wetlands of Bundala are magnificent with many exotic birds.

Bundala is among the premier bird watching sites in Sri Lanka. (more than 200 bird species recorded) Sri Lanka is the end point of a vast migration of birds from the north. The birds of eastern europe and perhaps some from the western europe, take the "indo-Asian flyway"one of the two bird migratory routes in the region, through the Himalaya & Southern tip of India to reach Sri Lanka .

Transport, to Bundala, was organised through the hotel and was very efficient. The driver was really nice and very informative. We arrived at the park and before we even entered saw all types of birds and a number of crocodiles. We arrived at the ticket office and were joined by a guide who was extremely knowledgeable and knew where to look and what to look for. The place was beautiful and I would strongly recommend a visit to all bird lovers and generally to anyone who enjoys nature. The birds we saw included: swamp hens, green kingfishers, blue tailed kingfishers, purple herons, eagles, bee eaters etc. Animals we saw included: elephants, mongeese, water buffalo, land monitors, 2 species of monkey, hares etc. I absolutely loved this experience and there was no one else there, which made it even better!
