This seems to be Germany's Stonehenge and is well worth a visit. Free parking, information in many languages, coffee shop and picnic spaces. Beautiful setting and some cost to climb the structure, or just enjoy the walk around the lake and view the huge structure

Hermannsdenkmal

The monument for the Germanic tribal leader Hermann or Arminius, is an impressive statue in the middle of the hills near Detmold. You can buy a combination ticket with the Externsteine, which I both recommend. When visiting both locations you should wear sturdy walking shoes, the surroundings are steep, but astounding. There are gift shops and restaurants nearby, and the combination ticket is quite cheap.

Ältester Greifvogelpark Europas, zugleich Deutschlands größter Greifvogelpark

Watched their "show" where you see the birds right in front of you (like the Bald Eagle three inches away from my face-awesome!) which was funny and educating.
Afterwards we walked around and looked at the birds. You'll find information about every species on little signs. It is not very big, overall you will probably be done in 60-90 minutes. Good way to spend your morning!
Right outside us a huge playground, plan some time for that!

We used to live literally down the road from this park, my children still talk about it, and still miss it, they used to adore susie the parrot.
Fantastic childrens playpark, fantastic staff, lovely little coffee shop (food is basic but good) you must have the waffles, freshly made, with a coffee, believe me, nothing is better.
Go, enjoy, and waste a wonderful day

Schloss Detmold

Having visited Germany times and seen my share of Castles after a while they get monotonous. This Castle, home of the family which ruled the Kingdom of Lippe for over 200 years does stand out. First of all, it is not huge. Of course, it's not tiny....after all it's a castle....created to intimidate the non-royals. The guided tour is in German only; I didn't see anyone on an English speaking tour, but there might be some. Being proficient in understanding German helps, and our guide spoke very clearly. The castle is a great example of "Weser Renaissance", an architectual standard of the Weser River Valley. By the way, the city of Hameln (Hamlin in English) is not far away. It's motif of course is "The Pied Piper of Hamlin" and all those rats! For the castle Four Stars; for Hamlin 3.5 Stars.

This museum is a quiet (at least during xmas-nye) and pretty large museum, with a very diverse exhibition. You can see lots of puppets with traditional clothes from the surroundings, a very broad exhibition on the Hermansdenkmal as well as an interesting area for the Valkenburg castle ruins. Most interesting are the south american mummies. Especially the Detmold child and some which or over 1000 years old and never been investigated! The Detmold child has been travelling the world but is back in the museum right now. He is more than 6,500 years old. You will not find much advertisement for though... Might not be the best for couples though (bit freaky)
