The Svartisen Glacier Austerdalsisen

Norway’s second largest glacier, Svartisen, stretches over 370 km2 and has a full 60 glacier arms. One of the most famous glacial arms is Austerdalsisen in Rana Municipality. To reach the glacier arm, you may take a 20-minute boat trip over Svartisvatnet, followed by a 3 km hike to Austerdalsisen. You can experience this exciting landscape, which was covered by the glacier just a few decades ago. Austerdalsisen deposits crevassed ice into the water and ice cold glacial rivers. It is a majestic sight. The boat across Svartisvatnet only operates during the summer season. Please contact Polarsirkelen Reiseliv for boat schedules: Phone + 47 75 13 92 00

There is no other route to come here but by boat. Memorable experience. It is one of those experiences from your vacation that will linger for a long time in your memory. I must have said the word beautiful a hundred times as I sat and ate my hamburger dinner facing the glacier. Worth a visit when you are in Glomfjord. The fykantrappa was closed recently because the Statkraft people have discovered some bolts on the stairs were rusty. Drive to Holandvika and take the boat to Svartisen. There are bikes for rent at the pier of Svartisen. It is a kilometer walk to Brestua restaurant which faces the Engenbreen, one of the tongues of Svartisen glacier. Visit the moose park before reaching Brestua. To be honest, I wanted to come here to see a moose. We did not walk towards the glacier as we were still recovering from a previous hike in Lofoten. Dine at Brestua. It is a luxury to have dinner with a view of a glacier. A hamburger dish becomes gourmet in your head when you are surrounded by this beautiful and priceless view. Price is not steep in Brestua. Thank God. We saw two cabins that you could rent. Must be so exotic to stay here for the night knowing it is only you, the moose Embla and 2-3 workers in the area. Maybe a troll will appear (in your imagination). Be conscious of the timetable of the boat. I am not sure if camping is allowed here. But if you have a boat, then you could dock here for the night. There is a plan to build a circular fancy hotel by the lake facing the glacier on one side and the other side would be facing the pier. I wonder if it will push through. It will be an added bonus to be able to sleep in this area. Maybe add more moose too as Embla, the moose, is alone.
