Abbeville Opera House

We have yet to attend a performance in this handsome building, but are very much looking forward to that. During our recent visit management was kind enough to allow a self-guided tour of the building‘s public areas (not backstage) and we came away impressed with the historic look and cozy feel of this very special venue. The Abbeville Opera House is a cultural treasure. Kudos to the many individuals, organizations, corporations, and agencies that have pitched in to renovate, update and promote a facility that any small town would be proud to have

Burt Stark Mansion

Reviewed By Linda H - Anderson, South Carolina

Twenty-two of our church members spent an hour and a half with David, our enthusiastic and well-informed docent, touring the mansion. History did come alive as David told us stories about the people who had lived their lives here. Besides the historical significance of Jefferson Davis holding the last council of war meeting at the mansion, there were interesting tales to be heard about twin sisters Fannie Stark and Mary Stark Davis. Mrs. Davis lived in the mansion in Abbeville until her death at age 102, sometime in the 1980's. Abbeville is a wonderfully interesting town to visit, but be sure to include the Burt Stark Museum when you're there.

This place has several open pits that you can prospect in. Not really a place for small kids to go it can be dangerous and you are not guaranteed to find anything. You will need to take digging tools, water, sunscreen, and food since it...MoreYes, Although the mine is located in Antreville, GPS locations should be Abbeville SC. The mine is located on a gravel road. Thanks and glad you had fun.

Parson's Mountain Recreation Area

Reviewed By Kristin S - Columbia, South Carolina

The park offers a medium sized lake to kayak or fish on. There are also trails throughout for hiking, biking, and OHV. One trail leads to some abandoned gold mines, and if you continue up the mountain there is a lookout tower (can't climb it), but you get 360 degree views of the surrounding area from over 800 feet up. Great views in the Fall! There are also some other trails that offer a more challenging hike, and often times hard to follow the blazes. Overall definitely worth a trip if this sounds like your kind of day adventure.

Red Barn Likker

Reviewed By Citallwic - Columbia, South Carolina

Red Barn Likker, a small-batch producer of high quality moonshine, is one of the most unusual and interesting attractions in South Carolina. The distillery is easy to find, being located on the court square across from the Abbeville Opera House. If you stop by when they’re open – that is, Thursday-Friday-Saturday from 11 am to 7 pm – you can enjoy a little tour of the distillery, sample the ‘shine at the tasting bar (add flavorings if you like), and buy 90 or 100 proof ‘shine. You have to take your purchases with you. They can legally distill the stuff and sell it on the premises, but they aren’t allowed to ship it. We were greeted warmly when we visited, and I’m sure you will be too. No food is served on the premises.

Humane Society Alliance Fountain

Reviewed By Citallwic - Columbia, South Carolina

To make it easier for workhorses, dogs and cats to get access to water in urban places, money funneled through the National Humane Alliance was used to construct about 125 watering troughs and fountains in American communities during the early 1900s.. Installed in 1912, this five-ton beauty in Abbeville’s Court Square was constructed of bronze-trimmed Maine granite. It’s a rare artifact, being one of the few surviving Humane Society Alliance fountains still in its original location.

The fountain has an interesting design. Water flowed from the mouths of lions into an upper bowl that served as a watering trough for horses. The lower bowls (now filled with concrete) were for dogs and cats. Today the fountain is ensconced in a brick-rimmed pool that surrounds its base. A nearby historical marker provides relevant information.
