I took my 2 grandsons to the National Trust Summer of Sport during the summer holidays last week, and although it poured with rain, it was still a great day. It's such a beautiful relaxing area, and we plan to return next week, and hope the weather is better. We arrived at 11am and left at 4pm. The children played cricket and football, did some colouring and we ventured to Chute Woods to visit the adventure playground, which they loved, in fact I could hardly make them leave. We did the walk around the woods too and saw all the dens previous families had made. The NT are happy for you to make a den of your own or build on others, which is a great idea. Next week we plan to visit the tree cathedral and do the stone age walk, and play cricket/football again and try our hand at flying a kite. It was a free event, the staff were great especially the gentleman on reception, who couldn't be more helpful and we had lunch and afternoon tea in the cafe. The toilets were spotless, and I thoroughly recommend a visit, as even if you only visit the cafe the views are stunning. It looks as if in hot weather they open all the sliding glass doors in the cafe which must be lovely. There are some great historical photos on the back wall of the cafe too, which were really interesting. Am really looking forward to our return, and I am coming up all the way from Devon !!

Lovely church in the centre of town. It dates from norman times being started in 1132. Lovely norman arches and some nice stained glass windows. A very attractive alter.

Saracens Head

British restaurant and bar offering authentic British cuisine along with Italian dishes. Offering range of drinks including draft beer, cocktails and mocktails. The Saracens Head building has been a key part of Dunstable’s high street since 1540.In fact, as you enter the Saracens Head today you will have to step down a couple steps because the road has been resurfaced so many times over the years, the street level is now higher than the floor!

We’ve seen the changes to the Saracen’s head menu since the refurbishment into a restaurant a few years ago and been meaning to try it for a while. We weren’t disappointed. On a recent Saturday night visit we loved the food and the décor….. lovely food in a nice and open setting with plenty of room at each table. Like many visitors that night we hadn’t booked, but there was no problem seating us as there is plenty of capacity. The advertising says this is also a cocktail bar. The servers were very pleasant and the service just right…. Orders were taken promptly, served in a timely manner and we weren’t hurried. The food was excellent, both in terms of quality and price. We both had prawn cocktail as a starter, although there was plenty of other choices, which came in a cocktail glass with plenty of prawns, a nice sauce and was not over heavy on the salad. We both had steaks; one sirloin and one ribeye, both served as ordered, which were very succulent and tasty. The chips were nice and crispy and were, or appeared to be, made in house. The peppercorn sauce provided as standard was nice and creamy and again appeared to be freshly made. We both commented that the quality and taste of the steaks was better than several other local chains. For dessert there is no menu, requiring the server to tell us the options, suggesting fresh every day. I had the sticky toffee pudding, a nice light sponge served with custard, my personal highlight dish.

I visited here this week with my 4 year old grandson. Free parking for 3 hours, bargain. Lovely cafe next to a play area, food very reasonable, plenty of seating indoors and out. Lovely walk, children and dog friendly, accessible for prams, pushchairs and wheelchairs. If you don't want to walk the whole site they have cut grass paths through wild flower meadows. On the day we visited they had free things for children to play and face painting. We loved the gardens and my grandson enjoyed the vegetable garden as the design had be done in the style of stories which we had read, his favourite was Mr Macgregors garden from the Peter Rabbit Story.

Enjoy the views over the Bedfordshire countryside from insider the glass sides restuarent and Gift shop, or take your sandwich or hot meal outside and watch the Gliders and Hangliders sore infront of you. Great place to walk your dog with its many trails or just enjoy an ice cream from the Ice cream van in the nearby car park and watch the families enjoying picnics and playing football. Not to forget the Blurbell woods are near by. I come home to the U.K. twice per year for extended visits and many a day are spent enjoying the views with a good cup of tea.

Visited the Ewe and Lamb yesterday, we were a bit apprehensive with what’s going on at the moment but had absolutely nothing to worry about at all, we were met at the door by the manager who explained the new ways of the pub, we were shown to our table and were encouraged to download the new app, which we did, my husband and I ordered fish and chips and can only say it was the best we have had in a long time, the staff on duty were excellent, I will definitely be recommending this pub to my friends and family, thank you for a lovely evening
