The majestic Austrian Alps stretch across the country, an awe-striking area of Ice Age valleys, verdant heaths and alluvial cones within Europe's largest national park, 700-square-mile Hohe Tauern. Taking in the dramatic cities of Salzburg and Innsbruck and the beautiful province of Tirol, home to spectacular skiing and hiking, as well as Gross Glockner, Austria's highest peak, and some of the world's best winter and summer sports playgrounds, the Austrian Alps are an outdoor lover's paradise.

Domplatz Market

Reviewed By Departure811861 - Germany, null

The Christmas market in the square in front of the Salzburger Dom (Cathedral) is very atmospheric, especially when it is getting dark and it starts to snow. Around 100 booths are open to the guests. They inform about Austrian Christmas traditions, they sell Christmas decoration, all sorts of presents and a lot of culinary specialities. It is very nice to walk around and look at all the things, and at the people who are obviously enjoying their visit. This Christmas market has a very long history, which dates back to the 15th century. Thus it is one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world. Given the fact that it is situated in the old city of Salzburg, which is acknowledged world heritage, and with all the mountains around, it is really a very special institution or event, which a visitor should not miss in winter.

We love markets with fresh food and this was a pleasant surprise. Wasn't even on our plan to stop at until it was recommended by the front desk staff at Hotel Innsbruck. We picked up all sorts of wonderful local cheeses and got some fresh fruit for ourselves. The aroma and colors of all the different foods was a sensory delight! Be sure to stop in - browse - and enjoy the selection from all of the various vendors.
