Shanghai is the cool, confident face of modern China, and its energy is infectious. Go to the Bund to watch ships on the river and marvel at the huge variety of architectural styles on display, or watch the crowds go by in People’s Square. Shoppers should make a beeline for the Fabric Market, where you can have a suit or dress tailor-made for you at bargain prices. At night, explore all manner of fashionable restaurants, bars and nightclubs, or just stroll through the city enjoying the spectacular neon lights.

ChinaJoy

ChinaJoy is China's yearly gaming trade show filled with booths, electronic displays and flashy presentations held across several halls at the Shanghai New International Expo center. The expo is meant to be an industry trade event for the Chinese game industry, but many game enthusiasts and spectators stand in line each year to see the crazy spectacle of the game presentations and the hundreds of "booth babes" hired to draw attention to gaming companies' wares. ChinaJoy offers a mixture of cosplay (costume play), elaborate displays and new technology.

F1 - Chinese Grand Prix

As a leg of the prestigious Formula One World Championship, the Chinese Grand Prix draws top F1 driving talent to Shanghai every April, and the city's hottest nightclubs host parties to welcome the influx of racing celebrities and moneyed spectators. The race takes place in Shanghai's northernmost suburb, Jiading, at the Shanghai International Circuit. The 5.451km track was designed by Hermann Tike, and the distinct layout – made to look like the Chinese character shang (上) as in Shanghai – features a particularly difficult corner combination that can trip up many drivers.
