Tis Artas to Gefiri (Arta's Bridge)

This old bridge with its four arches and unusual high arch which is not in the middle is the must see and iconic sight of Arta. It is really lovely to walk over it and walk along the Gardens beside it.

The Church of Panagia Parigoritissa

Reviewed By hemarwai - Oxford, United Kingdom

Approaching this church you are impressed by the size, its location on a small hill, its completeness, and the beauty of the stonework. It was built in the thirteenth century on the site of a previous church, and was formerly part of a large monastery.
Once inside it is magnificent. The dome rests on eight pilasters, on which stand three rows of columns, leaving the interieur open. It is adorned with decorative brickwork and frescoes from different ages featuring the Nativity, Evangelists and Prophets.
Well worth making a detour to Arta to see this beautiful Church.

Archaeological Museum of Arta

Reviewed By hemarwai - Oxford, United Kingdom

Stunning designed rooms, with perfectly lit statues, cases of ancient weapons, musical instruments, graves with skeletons and grave goods. I was bowled over by this museum. The highlight was the reconstruction of an ancient house with a hearth, The ancient town was called Ambracia, founded in 600 BC. It had urban planning, every house had water and this was a surprise! The civilisation was sophisticated. Wall panels showed the early history and the fall of Ambracia after the battle of Actium .
Today, Arta is not on the tourist route, but there is so much to see, it is worth going here, especially to see this Museum. My guidebook is brilliantly printed in both Greek and English, and the attendants there are very pleasant, although they don't speak English, but all the descriptions of the artifacts are in English and Greek. What a five star experience!

Ambracia was a city of ancient Greece on the site of modern Arta, of which a small wall stands, which is quite difficult to imagine.
