Barnard Castle is a market town in Teesdale, County Durham, England. It is named after the castle around which it grew up. It is the main settlement in the Teesdale area, and is a popular tourist destination. The Bowes Museum has the best collection of European fine and decorative arts in the North of England, housed in a "magnificent" 19th-century French-style chateau. Its most famous exhibit is the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton, though art includes work by Goya and El Greco.

Advance Booking Required : We are a working Alpaca Farm and run Alpaca Treks and Farm Visits throughout the year (subject to the Great British Weather!) We can tailor a trek or visit to suit most requirements and can arrange special Treks and Visits - Just ask and we'll see what we can do! Book as far in advance as you can as we do get very busy at weekends and during holiday periods and are often booked several months in advance! Try to have some alternate dates in mind. Please remember that both weather and animals can be unpredictable and as such we may need to cancel and rearrange at short notice. Alpaca Walks are currently £20 per person (supplement for extra people and children) and we require a minimum of two people as the alpacas prefer to go in a group. We cannot allow waiting on farm for insurance reasons but Cross Lanes Organics Farm Shop is 2 min away. Doug and Sam were friendly, welcoming and informative. We had a fantastic walk after each meeting our alpaca along with another couple. They have a beautiful serene location but very accessible. Doug and Sam answered all of our questions and were able to incorporate the social distancing measures and rules without taking away from the experience. A really enjoyable activity which I would definitely recommend!

Having relocated to Richmondshire we stayed at the Morritt Hotel for a few days whilst we waited for our furniture to arrive. The hotel has some of Sandra’s paintings on display in their restaurant and I bought a signed print of Waiting For Lunch as a moving in present to self. This Christmas Eve we got married and are looking to purchase another of Sandra’s lovely paintings. So much detail, definition and clarity.

Finally made it here, having mistakenly thought for years this was a little local history museum, and wow! Amazing and impressive French chateau style building, imposing setting, and a huge and fascinating collection. We quickly decided to concentrate on just a couple of areas to avoid being completely overwhelmed, so watched the unique silver swan demo (of course!) and then went round the absorbing section on the history of the museum followed by the delightful temporary exhibition on the Pre-Raphaelites. We also managed two visits to the excellent cafe (lovely homemade soup and cheese scones) - so much cosier than the cold and windy day outside. A great discovery for me - I’d be delighted to come for another visit to explore further.

This place is steeped in history, the castle is a great place to enjoy, the town/village is great quirky place with costa in the middle of the main rd well worth a visit, the views are to die for especially for a stroll down the river. What a relaxing place.

The Durham Dales are beautiful - and Eggleston Hall Garden adds to the delight! Garden lovers must come to this place. It is a paradise of well grown plants, flowers and trees...staff are so knowledgeable and experienced. If you want to buy good quality plants - come here! There is also a great garden trail you can do (£2.50 in an honesty box) which is a bit like an IKEA route...but don't let that put you off - there's a map as well as numbered stones marking the way. The garden has several dogs who potter around - as pest control offices - and if you have a dog with you then you are requested to notify staff! If you are visiting the area then this garden is a must see. Put it on your holiday list!

We called there for tea after a long walk. Very nice staff, good tea shop and interesting place with visual information. Very clean. Car park was good and well signed and lots of things for kids to do including a woodland kitchen which my grandkids would love. I can't help but feel that whoever run s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty( and this area is outstandingly beautiful ) are so much more imaginative than the longer established National Parks . Well worth a visit.
