The stairs leading up on the cliff are taking not more than 10 min to go up, but better to be prepared. On the top, the great seascape is awaiting you. Get your comfy shoes on, take a windbreaker jacket (because it may be windy even in summer), it will be a long walk! The path leads you all along the shore, but be careful going down, the railing may be shaky. It is a perfect place to think and enjoy a small company since in the evening hours there is almost no one around.

Walking a bit further than the porte d'Aval, there is a second arch, through which the first arch can be seen, as well as the bay with white cliffs. Well worth the walk and effort! The path, all the way to cap d'Antifer is well marked and easy to follow. And the further one goes from Etretat village, the quieter it is.

Our first time in Étretat we were looking for things to do other than join the crowded beach. It was quite an uphill climb to get there only to be told it was cash only... unless you booked online and paid by PayPal - thank you internet, we paid and went it - so glad we did. These gardens are beautiful - tons of topiary and sculptures galore, all overlooking Étretat bay and the Monet cliffs in the distance. Highly recommended.

Our visit was in a Sunday and everyone in Northern France seemed to have the same idea. There is limited parking in town and we had to hike quite a way to get in to the beach. The town is lovely and plenty of places to eat. You can hike up either set of cliffs if your legs are young and your lungs are healthy. Lovely spot, will return when it’s not the middle of holiday season.
