Kielder Water Bird of Prey Centre

This place is totally amazing, when we went in i was a little disappointed that they weren't doing the bird of prey displays, but i soon changed my mind. first we looked at all the birds, and they do have many to see, but the highlight was being able to watch the very knowledgeable staff feed 3 of the birds, and they told us so much about the birds, they fed a falcon, a small grey owl and an American barn owl that was only 14 weeks old. This truly was the highlight of our holiday. I hope lots of people visit, particularly at the moment in these troubled times.

I visited with my husband and 7yr old son and it was just the break we needed. It's been a long year and we spent some great quality time as a family exploring the forest, fishing on the lakeside and chilling in our hot tub. We stayed in an Ash Premier Spa Lodge and it was absolutely stunning. Beautiful features, super clean and well equipped with everything you could possibly need. We played mini golf, went pond dipping and used the mini segways. All the activities we did we really enjoyed. Unfortunately we missed out on booking the observatory. It was fully booked really quickly so I recommend booking early to avoid disappointment. A couple nights we had food from the on site restaurant which was really nice and we also visited Bellingham and the little cafe there. It serves a brilliant full English. Apart from that we cooked in the lodge. We had a fantastic break and would thoroughly recommend it.

I done the osprey blue trail and then the lakeside trail. Most impressed with the cycle path around the lake, Lovely surface to ride on. Steep in a few short places and it’s a long way around but I do a lot o cycling. A mountain bike is not essential for the lakeside trail. it’s a well cared for path. One of best I’ve been on. I used a gravel bike but a hybrid, touring bike, etc will be fine but not suitable for a road bike. Very quiet and peaceful. Only downside is from the Castle car park the main lakeside trail could be better signposted, had trouble finding it as first visit to Kielder. Osprey trail not suitable for small children but older kids with MTBs will be fine.

Just down from the castle to the right is the maze. Was great fun trying to find the glass section. Lots of corners with a step up so you can have a peek over the top to get your bearings. Great game of hide and seek can be had and a great way to start/end your trail

Kielder Castle Visitor Centre

Turned up for the Gruffalo trail didn’t realise the castle would be closed but the toilets are open and there’s a snack van parked in front of it serving food and drinks. There’s a Large car park with reasonable charges, campervans and motorhomes can park over night for £10. It’s a great start for walking, hiking and bikes. All the trails are available on maps by the car park Be careful if your satnav says to go along the Forrest Road. It’s a gravel track that cuts through the park rather than going round but only suitable for 4x4 and similar vehicles. We have winter tyres on our VW and made it through ok but lots of potholes and I did get a bit worried we may not make it to the other end on some bits ???? We’ll definitely be back and probably stay overnight to make the most of it as we have a campervan. But there are loads of campsites about and the Anglers Arms was only a few minutes walk away as well
