The 7 best Farmhouses in Syracuse, Italy

April 27, 2023 Myesha Cogley

Once one of ancient Greece’s most important cities, today Syracuse (Siracusa in Italian) is a lively town of about 125,000 on Sicily’s southeast coast. The city overflows with amazing remnants from its long history. Romans, Vandals and Normans are but a few of those who ruled here after the Greeks. In Syracuse’s harbor, Ortygia Island (also called Città Vecchia or Old City) is the site of many of the main attractions, including the seventh-century cathedral and the Fountain of Arethusa.

Agriturismo Pozzo di Mazza

The Holiday Farm Pozzo di Mazza is located about 7 km from Syracuse, just south of Porto Grande (the Big Harbour), in the pre-park area surrounding Plemmirio marine protected park, along the streets of the baroque, just a few minutes from the beaches of Arenella and Fontane Bianche. Derived from a nineteenth-century tenement formerly intended for processing grapes, as demonstrated by the perfectly preserved millstone, the land around the block, now used for the cultivation of citrus fruits and vegetables, were once planted with vines. Next to the local mill there is the great oven room with an unusual shape that evokes enchanting images of ancient country life and ancient fragrances of freshly baked bread, stuffed buns and roasted vegetables. The farm houses are surrounded by a large garden which leads directly into almost all the rooms that are quiet, spacious and furnished with simple elegance, in harmony with the charming atmosphere of the whole place. All the rooms have private bathrooms, air conditioning, refrigerator and hairdryer. In the garden, there is a large swimming pool.

A delightful farmhouse with spacious rooms and lovely gardens. We were there in April 2022 and the rooms were a bit cold, but an extra blanket solved that. Food was excellent and the staff friendly and helpful.

Agriturismo Terrauzza sul Mare

Terrauzza sul Mare looks out on the beautiful coast of the Ionian Sea, on the Plemmirio promontory, where , between XVIII and XVII centuries B.C. , the first Greek Ionian settlers arrived and afterwards, Dorics found the city of Siracusa. The Firm, made of 11 hectares, produces vegetables, all over the field and also a small amount of lemons and olive oil. Terrauzza sul Mare is situated at only 8 km from the city of Siracusa and 22 km from Noto. Both cities have been declared, by UNESCO, of being part of human heritage, thanks to their archeological assets and Baroque style, which you can see on the eighteenth-century buildings. At about 50 km from us, you will find another UNESCO heritage site, Palazzolo Acreide, which, also is both a Baroque and archeological town, with its Greek theatre. Every year, in Siracusa's Greek theatre, classical plays are performed, written by ancient Greek playwrights but Palazzolo Acreide's theatre hosts them too. Terrauzza sul Mare is situated at 70 km from Catania Aereoport and provides a bus public service to Siracusa. The firm, run by Renata and Giuseppe, has 9 fully equipped and air-conditioned apartments, surrounded by green and nature. The apartments are able to lodge two or more people and breakfast is included. Breakfast is brought in baskets every morning, which are left on the tables outside the apartments. Each apartment has a double bedroom, entrance with kitchen, bathroom with shower and an area outside, where you can sit and relax. The calmness and scents of the garden, especially in spring, are the features which make Terrauzza sul Mare the ideal place for an extremely relaxing holiday. The entrance to the sea can be reached through an internal path which will take you to our bay of rocks. It has been outlined by Etna a few millions of years ago and has remained immaculate since and it is now part of Plemmirio's Protected Marine Area, characterised by clear and warm water. You will be able to find sandy beaches going from 1 km south from us, up to Capo Passero, passing through beautiful beaches such as Vendicari and San Lorenzo. Our firm does not provide food service but at 100 meters from us, you can find a pizzeria and within 5 km there are good restaurants along the sea. At 1.5 km from us, you will find two good mini-markets which also provide ready hot meals. Another unique characteristic about Terrauzza sul Mare, is its CERAMIC'S LABORATORY. It is run by the owner of the firm Mrs Renata, who, on demand, organises printmaking courses on terracotta objects. In the Farm a good restaurant with Siclian menù.

Peaceful and natural

I stayed with my parents for two nights. Lovely quiet area within driving distance to Siracusa. The owners were both most helpful in guiding us to both restaurants and a local convenience store. The buildings are beautiful and rural, and even come with local cats! Also there is a lovely rock pool beach only a few minutes walk across the property. Lovely for an afternoon Dip! Breakfast was kindly provided on the morning in a basket with bread and cake, and other items Which we enjoyed outside our apartments.

Villa dei Papiri

The holiday farm “Villa dei Papiri” is an old Sicilian house dating back to the 19th century. It dominates a 13 hectares area rich in organic farming of lemons and oranges and surrounded by papyrus plants, palms, olive, almond and carob trees, cypress, bonsais as well as other wonderful Mediterranean plants. It is located 5 kms away from Syracuse, inside the Natural Reserve of the River Ciane & Saline, a few meters from the mythological spring source Fonte Ciane whose myth of Persephone is praised in the Metamorphoses of Ovid. It is surrounded by beautiful Egyptian Papyri, exactly the same papyrus used for the preparation of those extraordinary paper rolls on which most of human history has passed, and it continues to grow wild in this place unique in the world. The area also denotes an archaeological as well as naturalistic interest , as there are several Paleolithic remains such as tombs, caves and wells. These valuable findings show the presence of the ancient Sicilian habitation; the Sicilians were the Indo-European ethnic group that inhabited eastern Sicily, while the other ethnic groups of Elymian and Sikelian people inhabited respectively the west and the center of the island as reported by the historian Thucydides . In this vast nature reserve Villa dei Papiri is an historical building of great landscape value. Elegantly refined and equipped with every comfort it offers to its visitors the opportunity to relax and enjoy the beauties of the place.

At peace with the world

This location is so rich in all that counts in life rather than frivolous, artificial, modernistic structures of shapes and colours. All is natural, the horse and donkeys are your neighbours. The dogs greet you at the door. The host is very welcoming and going the extra mile to be of service almost to the extent that you feel spoilt. The beautiful collection of antiques in the breakfast room (converted stable) is such a disctraction that pleases the eye and entertains your breakfast time with things to admire; from chess sets to puppets, from indian beds to musical instruments, from statues to Sicilian ceramics. The place disconnects you completely from the hustle and bustle of daily living and transports you into a world of dreams and imagination.

Agriturismo La Frescura

La Frescura is an ancient country house dating back to the 17th century. Completely done up in 2007, it is faithful to the architectural characteristics of its ancient origins. The two-story building is immersed in nature and surrounded by twelve hectares of citrus groves. The typical Sicilian "masseria" develops around a courtyard with direct access to the accommodations. The lodges are different from one another, in an ambiance of a simple and minimal country style, with a flair for comfort and attention to detail. All of them are en suite, and some of them self catering. Complement for all of them air conditioner, the kitchen are full service. At disposal for our guest: library (English, Italian, Dutch), common space, panoramic terrace, orange and lemon trees garden, parking, panoramic walking paths, bike rentals, market-garden, touristic information, maps and guidebook. The position represents an ideal compromise between the countryside, sea and city in a very quiet and relaxing environment. 6Km from Siracusa city, nearby the highway, easily accessible the airport, Catania and all the east coast of Sicily!

Just Ok

The grounds are lovely - however that is all that's going for this place. The owner is very stingy. Breakfast was bare bones - grocery store orange juice and some bread with cheese. You're in a farm surrounded by orange trees, but the oranges are only to see and smell from afar. The owner didn't even provide any toiletries - there was some hand soap and she told us to use that to shower and shampoo! This certainly isn't an agriturismo because you won't find anything 'agro' in your stay. There are dogs on the property which didn't stop barking all night long to add to the charm! Better places to stay - would recommend to avoid this one If you decide to go here - be warned that the directions are quite tricky. Make sure you have the directions well mapped or you'll be driving in circles
