Jardin de Corail

The coral gardens are incredible. If staying at Le Taha'a you should cross over to the motu across the channel, walk towards the open sea area at the end and then get in. When you do be careful because that's where the current is strongest. To avoid the coral you can stay on the outside closest to the shoreline that you enter. For better scenery try to get into the middle of the channel asap. There are a ton of fish. Most are small. The exception was a giant trigger fish that was a little aggressive. He was about 1 foot tall and 1.5-2 feet long. They have nasty looking teeth too. He was right in the middle close to where the gardens start. You definitely need water shoes and if you have gloves, a rash guard/swim shirt, and board shorts even better. I went through 6-8 times over a few days and while sometimes I escaped unscathed, on 2 occasions I ended up with scrapes. I was being aggressive though and swimming in some tight areas and where the coral comes very close to the surface. On one occasion I swung my arm to paddle and my palm scraped the coral cutting me in a few places. On another occasions I scraped my knees and the side of my calf on coral. A week later it's still healing. Definitely worth the experience though. I recommend water shoes over flippers because when the water gets really shallow you may want to stand and walk out but you need to step around the coral. Some area are tight and flippers wouldn't fit where you're trying to step plus it's hard to walk in them anyways.

We learned a lot about how vanilla is grown in Tahaa. The gal who showed us around and explained to us how vanilla is grown, harvested and made into extract spoke good English and was very friendly and helpful. We were glad that we were able to purchase some vanilla to take home to make into extract. Our guide went out of her way to ensure this would happen. Make sure you bring cash or Visa, since they don't take American Express.

We were staying at Le Tahaa. They're free shuttle boat dropped us of at the dock and at the main street we took a left and walked the 10minutes to the fairly non descript rum factory. No fancy signage outside and we nearly missed it. They had a slow but steady stream of visitors while we there. Nevertheless, one of their staff showed us around. Its a small place and they do everything on site including pressing sugar cane, coconuts, etc. They spent about 45 minutes with us. It was free and there was no obligation to purchase anything. We did because the rum was good and the oils sold here are probably about 30% cheaper than at our hotel and they were the ones that suggested we visit. They showed us how they make the rum, age it in bourbon barrels from Tennessee, etc. They then had different rums of theirs for tasting but none of the aged rum. We chose the passion fruit rum as it can almost be drank over ice. They also showed us how they grown vanilla and how they turn vanilla, coconuts, and other locally grown ingredients into various oils that are good for your skin, healing wounds and sunburns - that came in handy, mosquito repellent - that also came in handy, etc. We ended up buying some of these too.
