The 6 Best Walking Tours in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

June 30, 2021 Randal Brittian

Like all of the U.S. Virgin Islands, St. Thomas has plenty of opportunities to lounge on the beach, splash in the sea, or amp it up with watersports. It also boasts a bountiful duty-free shopping scene – just be prepared to brave the cruise ship crowds. Charlotte Amalie swells with Danish colonial architecture and pirate legend. Shiver ye timbers at Blackbeard’s Castle, then work up an appetite by climbing the historic 99 Steps, constructed from the ballast bricks of 18th century Danish ships.

We had a really good time on the treasure hunt. At first we were not sure about doing the augmented version, but since we were with our special needs daughter, that worked out great. She was good at operating the iPad, so she was able to contribute the whole time, even if not understanding the clues. Anthony was great! So much fun and was especially good with our daughter. Fun way to spend a morning, get some island history and see a beautiful beach.

My fiancé and I took Gerard’s tour last week and absolutely loved it. His knowledge of history helped us understand the islands better. Emancipation garden was very moving for us. We loved that he took us to places to eat that we wouldn’t have found on our own. We liked his recommendations so much that we went back to MyBrothersWorkshop (mybrothersworkshop.org) and Gladys cafe for more food a few days later. Even got a cookbook signed by chef Julius Jackson. MBW is a place that shines with the people who run it, the food they share and the lives they change. Thx Gerard for your personal attention, your attitude about the island and for sharing it all. We loved it!

We loved this race. It was my favorite part of our whole trip. You don’t have to be super fit to compete. We had grandma on our team so it was walking at a very slow pace, but we still came in first before all the teams that were running. It just depends on solving the puzzles. There was a variety of tasks and we got to run around and see a bunch of Catalina. My 7-year old loved it too so it is great for the whole family. Matthew was a fantastic host.

Ocean Parks like Sea World offer awesome dolphin shows. They introduce thousands to the incredible capabilities and personalities of dolphins and sea lions from bleachers. You might even get splashed. Coral World is a different. It's smaller. It offers close up, personal encounters with dolphins and sea lions, where you actually get in the water and touch and communicate with these amazing creatures. You WILL get wet, because you will be in the same pool with the dolphin or sea lion. We did both sea lion swim and dolphin swim. There is more contact with the sea lion, there is more communication with the dolphin. (By the way, just so you know what to expect, you will not ride on either animal. In our visit, there was no kissing or handshake with the dolphin, like some photos suggest, but we were able to issue 'commands' and plop a fish into its mouth). Which is better? I liked the sea lion better, my wife liked the dolphin better. It just depends on what you like. Since the trainer is dealing with a half dozen or so guests, instead of hundreds or thousands, you might expect the cost of the show will be a little higher. You'd be right. It's not cheap. The animals are carefully chosen and extensively trained. The trainers are also extensively trained, both in caring for the animals and caring for the guests. All that training is expensive. But how do you put a value on a once in a lifetime experience? Was it worth it? We say YES. We consider it a good value and the highlight of our island vacation. Our experience in the water hand-in-flipper with the sea lion was thrilling, seeing a dolphin jump out of the water at our 'command' are experiences we will never forget.
