December 20, 2017 Marianna Hollaway

It also boasts a bountiful duty-free shopping scene – just be prepared to brave the cruise ship crowds. Charlotte Amalie swells with Danish colonial architecture and pirate legend. Shiver ye timbers at Blackbeard’s Castle, then work up an appetite by climbing the historic 99 Steps, constructed from the ballast bricks of 18th century Danish ships.

We had an incredible evening. Views were very nice. Food was outstanding. The lobster and Filet was the best we have had on island. The hand made veggie cutlet is my wife's favorite. Our server Tom was professional and yet personal. Great advice on St John.
We can not wait to return!

Oceana

Oceana Restaurant and Wine Bar combines the perfected culinary methods of yesterday, the creativity of tomorrow, and the spice of the Caribbean all in one of the most beautiful and historic locations on island. Our guests can expect an unforgettable culinary and dining experience in a private villa right on the water, and feel the years disappear as they are swept away from the busy modern world while enjoying locally-sourced and artfully-prepared entrees. We also feature house-infused cocktails and an impressive wine selection. A TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence recipient several years running, Oceana has also been voted "Best of VI" multiple times, most recently for Best Gourmet Dining 2016.

Lackluster service, understocked bar, rude hostess, food ok. This used to be a premier restaurant on the island, now it's coasting with no menu innovations and a rather self-satisfied smugness.
A small example. There's no excuse in a fine dining restaurant for a table to be off balance and requiring a waiter to push a cork under one leg. This issue should be checked daily before opening.

Amalia Cafe

Amalia Cafe is a delightful open air Spanish themed restaurant in historic downtown Palm Passage, Charlotte Amalie. The menu is heavy on tapas, with favorite Spanish entrees like Paella or Zarzuela. Enjoy a taste of Spain in the Caribbean.

A touch of Spain on a side street in downtown Charlotte Amalie. Friendly service with good food and a patio from which to observe the passing scene. I had the soup of the day plus gambas and crabmeat Tapas. My wife had pumpkin soup and a very authentic Sangria. It was an excellent choice for lunch.

Island Time Pub

Reviewed By Sapphire-Ed - St. Thomas

My friend Loopy and I went into town the other night to get some pizza and a few drinks. Val was tired so she stayed home and asked me to bring a slice home for her.
When we got to island time the place was busy and we were lucky to get two seats at one corner thanks to someone moving over.
As is usually the case we met some interesting local people to chat with. This night it was the owner of a great restaurant downtown, his pretty lady and a partner of his.
Loopy is in the business so they talked about restaurants, locations yada yada and I and his lady talked about everything else including Brooklyn, NY which is where she was from as well.
So we spent a couple to few hours at the bar talking, drinking and eating good pie!
Guess what. I forgot to bring a slice home!
Try Island Time. It’s not only good, it’s fun.

We were glad to see thirteen still open after the storms, food and atmosphere just as great as ever with the new management. Its off the beaten path, but worth the drive for the great views from the restaurant and the eclectic menu items. Its small, and don't think they take Reservations right now, but wasn't horribly busy on the tuesday night we were there.

Heidi's Honeymoon Grill

Heidi's is a small seaside operation, that offers gourmet food at a fair price. Seven days a week she serves lunch on the beach, mon thru fri breakfast at the ferry dock, Saturday night is dinning under the stars, and on Monday night we show a drive-in style movie complete with a cartoon and pop-corn

My family and I have eaten at Heidi's more times than I can count. The food is fresh, reliable and perfectly seasoned. The variety of dishes is enough for all of us to find something we want and we have a variety of preferences from vegetarian to steak Sandwich lovers. The atmosphere is low key and you can grab a soda or a drink. i prefer the QAC (Quiet Afternoon Cocktail) and fish tacos with outdoor grilled flavor on a warm grilled tortilla with some crunchy slaw on top. And sometimes I just want a "super dog" which is a long grilled hot dog on a bun. Perfect beach food done right!

Beuchert's Beer Garden

Reviewed By stinkydeer - Midland, Michigan

We were wanting to get away from the crowd of the jewelry stores and find some real people. We found it at Beuchert's!
Normally my posts and reviews are funny or there is a story... Well here we go!
We stumbled off the boat and wandered around dazed and confused after a long night of drinks and dancing on the 16th deck or our cruise ship. After getting our legs under us we headed toward the thousands of taxi's ready to take our money for the short ride into town.
After getting into town it was nothing but Jewelry Stores run by folks from other parts of the planet. We wanted to see some local people and hang out. While fighting off the many store owners ganging up on us like a gang of rabid rats in an Indiana Jones movie. We noticed an alley opening with a banner that just read, Beer Garden. There were a bunch of sheets of paper printed out that read, "World's Greatest Margaritas" We figured... What the hell? Why not have the World's Greatest Margarita?!
You can only look at so many diamonds and gem stones before your wacked and start spinning from all the dealing going on.
Sure nuff we started down the alley and found ourselves leaving the wrestling match that was main street. The place was beat up a bit from the last round of Hurricanes but you can only do so much with what you have. It was perfect for what we were looking for and its getting better.
Nala (sorry if I spelled your name wrong dude) was a great host and mixed us up a fantastic drink. He sat with us and told us some local history and made us feel right at home. We heard a great story of his fight with the Hurricanes as the music played in the background and the rain started to pour. It was like we were in an old movie. It was EPIC!
Great guy to hang out with, down to Earth and just really cool to talk to. Next time on the island we are going back. We made a great friend.

Island View Guest House

Reviewed By John C - Newtown, Pennsylvania

For years we've visited all of the standard fine dining restaurants on the Island, and are always on the lookout for something new . Finally! An agent at the Marriott suggested this place and offered to make a reservation for us (celebrating a wedding anniversary). We decided to go for it and what an excellent decision. Here is what you should know.
1. It's a small restaurant with limited Seating - and only 4-5 tables have a railing/harbor view. Book well ahead as its only open 3 days a week and offers two seatings.
2. If your plans change let them know. Don't be the obnoxious guy who turned up with four extra people and demanded instant Seating with a view.
3. Take a taxi. Parking is tight. (although the night we went there was room for a couple more cars)
4. The salad bar is $8 all you can eat. Worth the trip.
5. Entrees are limited but good. Although everyone raves about the steak (like me) , the fish is pretty good too (mahi)
6. You can watch the chef cook your steak on the grill if you are so inclined.
7. There is an honour bar. Make your own drinks and keep your own tab.
8. This was our cheapest evening meal of the week. And probably the best.
9. The view is wonderful. The location is up in the hills at the western (airport) end of the island.
Enjoy your food. We're going back again next year.

We stopped here for a light lunch and ate on the balcony overlooking Cruz Bay from Mongoose Junction. Neither of us being super hungry, we decided on drinks and sharing the nachos. When trying to describe their unique flair my husband dubbed them hipster nachos. They were both unique and delicious with house made green and gold tortilla chips topped with Greengo beans, melted Cheddar cheese, shredded cabbage, corn, poblano peppers, scallions, red onions and tomatoes. Finished with chipotle aioli, cilantro fresca and house made salsa. I had donkey punch to drink, which was Capt Morgan, butterscotch schnapps, pineapple juice, splash of grenadine, and also unique. I like it when you don't get what you expect in a good way. This was definitely that.

Lesson learned - only judge St Thomas restaurants based on post-Irma reviews. The two places we had dinner this week had terrific pre-Irma reviews. Post-Irma I would be careful. Based upon reviews we read in TripAdvisor, this was a very different restaurant. The food was more like pub food - the hamburger was very good. The coconut crusted chicken tenders while good, didn’t have any coconut we could taste! There was a mix up with our reservation and although it was only 8 pm - the kitchen was ready to close. Once things got set, the service and food were very good.
