Nature Park Stara Planina

Very beautiful Mountains, little rivers with several Waterfalls, great nature, some hotel accomodations like Falkensteiner Stara Planina. The Nature Park of Stara Planina belongs to the best of nature Serbia has to show to tourists.

What is amazing is how somewhere so stunning can receive relatively few visitors. We did a fabulous private tour organised by Bane Simovic at www.mondorama.rs which took in many stunning places. Above Pirot is the beautiful resort of Basarski Kamen in the Mountains. Hotel Stara there is a great place to take a coffee there before embarking on a hiking trail (directly behind the hotel) - well-marked - to Basarski Kamen peak. The view from there makes the 1.5 hour (fairly moderate) climb well worth it! Vrelo is a small place in the heart of Stara Planina where several rivers meet and it is very pretty. Close by, the Tupavica Vodopad (waterfall) is stunning and well worth the drive down a difficult non-Tarmac-ed road. At Rsovac, the famous Rosomacko Grlo natural phenomenon is located - a beautiful canyon with crystal clear water that you can drink from the stream. This place is truly a marvel of nature and should not be missed! The whole area is stunning, so go and explore yourself, or better still - seek out a local who can help point you in the right direction of what best to see.

The old and beautiful oriental house of famous Ristic family was built in mid-19th century. During the 20th century it became a host to the Museum of Ponišavlje, a place where innovative culture of the Pirot region is presented in its full beauty. Colorful carpets, old pottery, mixed oriental and slavic architecture, interesting stories of the Ristic family, examples of national costumes are just few of the things you're going to see in this museum.
The entrance fee for foreign tourists is only 120 dinars (approximately 1 euro). There's also a store where you can buy local souvenirs and other interesting artefacts for very low prices.
You won't regret visiting Museum of Ponišavlje if you're passing through or staying in Pirot!

Tree lined cobblestone walkways follow the Nisava through Pirot making a wonderful place to walk. Closer to the river a wide grassy area is a great place to run the dogs and/or children. You'll see as well the occasional fisherman.
The fall foliage add to the experience on a warm fall afternoon. Enjoy!

Zavojsko Lake

Reviewed By Jasmina1010 - Oosterbeek, The Netherlands

The National Parks of Tara and Uvac are maybe the most beautiful Nature Parks in Serbia but the Nature Park of the Old Mountains (Stara Planina) in the neighbourhood of Knjaževac and Pirot comes nearby. Like the two other ones the Old Mountains have astonishing views and panoramas.
The Mountains are beautiful at many places in Serbia. There are many rivers crossing the Mountains and country. This you can find also in the Stara Planina. One of the rivers (Visočica) gives birth to the artificial Zavoj Lake. Like Uvac the region has grown even more beautiful than before after the creation of a lake.
Not only is the Lake of Zavoj very beautiful but also the natural environment. Besides of the Mountains there are several little rivers like the Toplodolska Reka and the Temstiča. They gave birth to several beautiful Waterfalls, which are called in the Serbian Language “vodopad”. When the river of Visočica comes out of the lake it combines with the Toplodolsko Reka in the river Temštica. This has a very nice canyon close to the village of of Temska.
In the past there were few hotel accommodations in the region of the Old Mountains. Now there is a 4 Star Hotel called Falkensteiner Stara Planina and the older Hotel StarA Planina at Planinarski Dom. Also Pirot itself has several accommodations.
Zavojsko Jezero doesn’t have a variety of modern accommodations. It has beautiful nature and quietness. If you love nature and pureness you will love it. If you love luxury, than it is better to go to another region. Because of the nature, pureness and rest, we like to go to the Lake of Zavoj some days each year. The pictures shows the quality of nature.

Pirot is a small place, but has some nice locations for taking a break and relaxing. One of the better is a Quay by the Nisava river. This is a fine place for taking a stroll. Good place to unwind.
