Parc national de l'Ile-Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Perce

Parc national de l'Ile-Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Perce stands out with its rich natural, historic, and geological heritage. Sculpted by time and the sea, at the Gaspe Peninsula's tip, it has the fortress of Bonaventure Island and the magnificent stone vessel of Perce Rock-Quebec's tourism emblem. Its outstanding flora and fauna, including its famous colony of Northern Gannets make it a must-see for visitors, as do the island's old homes-the last witnesses to the way the islanders lived a century ago.

We had a hard time finding out how to visit this park: however, it turned out to be the best day of our whole trip. I'll try to give some information about how to visit Bonaventure Island that might help you. The park is located on an island near Perce, Quebec. The parking is in a fairly large parking lot near the center of the village of Perce. It is on the ocean side of the road. There is a small blue sign for the park (and parking) that is hard to see. You need to purchase tickets for a boat tour to the island. They can be purchased at an office located near the parking lot and the visitor center buildings. They are not purchased at the park buildings. The name of the boat office is Les Bateaux de Croisieres/Julien Cloutier. That translates to Julien Cloutier Boat Tours. We were there in September, and the boat ran every hour from 9 am. The island closed at 4 pm when we visited. If you take the last boat at 3 pm, you won't be able to walk on the island. The boat leaves from the pier in Perce, visits Perce Rock, circles the island, and stops at the pier on the island. The cost for the boat tour is $35 and admission to the island is $8.50. On the boat tour around the island, you will see seals, bird cliffs and possibly other things. We saw a minke whale and a basking shark. When you arrive at the island, you are given a short orientation in French or sort of English. Then you file through and pay your park fee. We walked to the northern gannet nesting area and saw thousands of adult and young birds. You can get right up close to the birds. They are beautiful birds. The walk took about 45 minutes each way. It is a well marked path with some gain in elevation. Carry some water, because it is a long walk. Plan to go early enough that you can spend time at the nesting area and explore the rest of the island. This expedition takes a lot of time, but it is worth the effort. We enjoyed every minute of the boat ride and the island visit. Just be prepared for a lot of walking on the island.

I have been in many old time stores, Forts, etc in the West of Canada, but i have never been in one as magnificent as this one! Every bit of the store was interesting, and well preserved. It brought back many memories for my husband about life on the farm. I loved the old machines, filing cabinets, cannisters, boxes, clothing. There were buggies, farm implements, old washers - I do suggest a guide - we didn't have one, as we are English speakers, we had a guidebook. The french speaking guide had everyone laughing out loud. (They may have English speaking guides at other times - I am not sure - either way it is worth the stop!)

We are a young family with twins(6)and avid hikers.... This is an absolute must hike during our annual trip to Gaspésie. You can take the long route at the beginning of the "Chemin la carriers" or drive to the gravel pits and you'll have a 15 min walk in, for the young and old... Bring a towel and swim trunks if your brave enough to jump in.... very refreshing!
My only worry is that people will disrespect the environment and the charm of this beautiful site.

We arrived on 10:30am and waited in the line to buy tickets. We wanted to buy tickets for all 3 attractions - Tektonic, zipline and the glass platform. However, the cashier (that spoke very little English) told us that there is an English tour to the Tektonic only at 5pm. This was petty.
The view from the glass platform is nice, and also the zip-line is a nice attraction.

Church of Saint-Michel de Perce

Reviewed By Barheat - Hamilton, Canada

This is the 5th church built on the site. Construction took place from 1900 to 1903. Its large bell tower 100 feet high has never been completed according to plans and it lacks a spire of 50 feet topped by a cross. The left tower is incomplete being much shorter than the bell tower.
The interior is well developed with great attention to art and statuary. Ornaments are sober and give life to the walls and ceiling. Above the main entrance inside the church is a painting of the famous Perce Rock as befits the location of the church.
It is definitely worth the walk through the neighbourhood to see the church that continues to serve the spiritual needs of the local population.

Visiting the Galerie d'Art de Mourad Fouad was a wonderful experience. His paintings are magnificent and cover a great realm of art - impressionist, et cetera. I also was able to meet with the owner who is a very nice man and takes the time to explain each painting that I was interested in, and how he arrived at the subject matter in the painting I was asking about. I ended up purchasing two paintings that for some reason, reminded me of both Monet and Paris! Mr. Fouad is a highly educated man and art has been a sort of hobby for him since an early age. It is now a passion!!! This passion is reflected very well in his art work. I look forward to visiting this beautiful town again and also visiting his studio. I highly recommend that if you are in the area, contact Mr. Fouad - you will not be disappointed.
